Fonterra Shareholders' Fund stock gains a stronger operating backdrop after the cooperative lifted its 2026/27 milk price forecast. Demand for dairy powders improved.

Higher Milk Forecast Supports Outlook

  • Fonterra raised and narrowed its forecast range for the 2026/27 farmgate milk price.
  • Stronger demand for whole milk powder and skim milk powder is driving the update.
  • The outlook remains exposed to global dairy supply, demand and commodity-price trends.

Fonterra has raised the midpoint of its 2026/27 farmgate milk price forecast from NZD 9.50 to NZD 9.75 per kilogram of milk solids. The cooperative also narrowed the forecast range to NZD 9.00-NZD 10.50 from NZD 8.50-NZD 10.50. The announcement on Friday, October 30, 2026, strengthens the operating backdrop for Fonterra Shareholders' Fund units, although it does not by itself establish a price reaction.

In its official release, Fonterra said the update was driven largely by improving demand for whole milk powder and skim milk powder. Prices for the two products at the latest two Global Dairy Trade events rose by about 5 percent and 7 percent respectively, according to the company.

Demand Improves Across Key Markets

Fonterra attributed the demand improvement to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa and China. The cooperative also cited a well-contracted sales book despite record milk collections, while cautioning that global supply and demand could still affect the outlook.

The organic milk price forecast was lifted as well. Its midpoint rose from NZD 14.30 to NZD 15.25 per kilogram of milk solids, while the range moved to NZD 14.50-NZD 16.00 from NZD 13.30-NZD 15.30.

Operating Context For Investors

The higher milk price outlook can improve the earnings environment for farmer suppliers and supports the broader value proposition behind the fund units. Investors still face exposure to dairy commodity prices, production volumes, currency movements and demand in major export markets. Fonterra's FY27 earnings guidance remains 65 to 85 cents per share, according to its investor page.
