HSBC plans to combine Hang Seng Bank's asset-management operation with HSBC Asset Management, according to a Reuters report published on October 26, 2026. Two people with direct knowledge of the proposal said Hang Seng Investment Management, which oversees about 50 billion US dollars, could be absorbed by HSBC's fund business, which manages about 876 billion US dollars.

The proposed move would be the first reported integration of a Hang Seng business line since HSBC completed its privatisation of the Hong Kong lender in January. HSBC did not confirm that the combination would proceed, but said it remained committed to serving Hong Kong with two brands and to collaboration between the businesses.

Separate Banking Identity Remains

HSBC said Hang Seng Bank would remain a separately licensed bank with its own governance, brand, customer proposition and branch network. That distinction matters for investors because the planned asset-management combination would deepen operational links without removing Hang Seng's separate banking platform.

The transaction follows HSBC's acquisition of the outstanding Hang Seng shares after previously holding 63 percent of the bank. Reuters also noted Hang Seng's exposure to Hong Kong and mainland Chinese property markets, where asset quality has been an important consideration for the lender.

For the underlying business, the Hang Seng Bank investor relations page lists personal banking, cross-border banking, deposits and foreign exchange, wealth and retirement, commercial services, securities services and investment fund services. The bank is focused on Hong Kong customers while operating within HSBC's wider Asia-Pacific structure.

Hong Kong Banking Competition

Hang Seng competes in Hong Kong's full-service banking market, where HSBC and other large international and locally focused banks operate across retail, commercial and wealth services. Its differentiating position is its established Hong Kong franchise and its separate brand within the HSBC group.

Broader market developments are available in current market reports.
