- MAK Capital disclosed a 5.05% Hapvida stake for financial investment purposes without seeking control changes.
- Citi expects another difficult quarter, with pressure from beneficiary losses, margins and cash flow.
- Hapvida is scheduled to release third-quarter results on November 11.
Hapvida received notice that US investment manager MAK Capital Fund LP had raised its holding to approximately 5.05 percent of the Brazilian healthcare operator's common shares, according to Money Times on Tuesday, November 3.
MAK said the position was intended solely as a financial investment. The manager also stated that it had no predetermined target for further purchases and no objective of changing Hapvida's control or corporate structure.
Citi sees continued operating pressure
The disclosure came ahead of Hapvida's third-quarter results, scheduled for November 11. In the same report, Money Times said Citi had cut its price target to BRL 10 and reduced its 2026 and 2027 earnings estimates by 5 percent and 12 percent, respectively.
Citi expects the company to lose about 91,000 beneficiaries in the quarter and sees pressure from lower margins and cash consumption. The bank also expects the restructuring of roughly 1 million unprofitable customers to weigh on near-term operations, while asset sales and lower interest rates could provide potential support.
For investors, the upcoming results should show whether Hapvida's portfolio review is beginning to improve operating quality or is still adding transition costs. Citi's assessment, as reported by Money Times, is that visibility into the recovery remains limited.
Hapvida's market position
Hapvida operates in Brazil's private healthcare market and serves medical-plan beneficiaries. Its investor-relations site presents the company's purpose as ensuring access to quality healthcare. Brazil Stock Guide identified Amil, Bradesco Saude and SulAmerica among major competing operators and described Hapvida as the largest group by membership among those analyzed, despite a decline in August.
