HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is facing a more cautious valuation outlook after analysts reassessed the shipbuilder's prospects. Seoul Economic Daily reported on October 29 that iM Securities lowered its price target to 530,000 won from 860,000 won, citing broader shipbuilding-sector valuation declines, stronger Chinese competition and weaker expectations for special-purpose vessels.
Competition weighs on outlook
Mirae Asset Securities also reduced its target, to 570,000 won from 800,000 won. The brokerage said China's growing share of shipbuilding orders could slow LNG-carrier demand and pressure newbuild prices. It also considered the outlook for winning U.S. combat-ship orders less certain than the prospects for support vessels.
Both brokerages nevertheless retained buy ratings, according to the report. Their positive case rests partly on HD Hyundai Heavy's commercial order wins and the high margins generated by its offshore and engine-machinery businesses.
Strong backlog, softer quarterly comparison
Third-quarter revenue was 5.7536 trillion won and operating profit was 899.2 billion won. Seoul Economic Daily said both figures missed consensus estimates, while profitability excluding one-off factors was viewed as solid.
The commercial shipbuilding division posted a 14.7% operating margin. Offshore and engine machinery recorded margins of 33.3% and 24.2%, respectively, although the commercial margin declined from the previous quarter.
At the end of September, commercial shipbuilding orders stood at 13.79 billion US dollars, above the division's annual target. Company-wide order intake had reached 90.5% of its target, while backlogs amounted to 42.1 billion US dollars in commercial shipbuilding and 60.9 billion US dollars across the company.
What investors are watching
The central balance for investors is between a sizeable order base and more demanding assumptions for future growth. Chinese competition may affect order intake and pricing, while the planned U.S. shipyard with Kiewit is described as a medium- to long-term growth opportunity rather than an immediate earnings driver.
