Latam Airlines stock faces a reported capacity adjustment ahead of the 2027 second quarter. The changes involve frequency cuts, not route closures.

Oil prices reshape LATAM planning

  • LATAM submitted schedule adjustments to Brazil's aviation regulator on October 26.
  • The reported changes reduce flight frequencies, while aircraft may be redeployed and routes are not being closed.

LATAM Airlines is adjusting its planned network for the second quarter of 2027 as higher oil prices pressure the airline industry. Valor International reported on October 29 that LATAM submitted the schedule changes to Brazil's National Civil Aviation Agency on October 26.

The report said the airline adjusted 2,476 scheduled flights for the period, equivalent to about 5% of its planned operations. The changes concern lower frequencies rather than route closures, and the report cautioned that aircraft can be redeployed, meaning the schedule data does not necessarily translate into an equivalent reduction in flights operated in Brazil.

Brazil hubs bear the adjustment

The reported changes are concentrated at two major Brazilian hubs. Brasília accounts for 1,012 removed flights and Guarulhos for 976, according to the report. Among the routes affected are services from Brasília to Recife, Porto Seguro and Maceió, as well as routes from Guarulhos to Porto Seguro, João Pessoa and Jericoacoara.

For investors, the development highlights the sensitivity of airline capacity planning to fuel costs. LATAM's exposure also includes dollar-denominated expenses such as aircraft leases, while currency movements can add another variable to the operating environment. The report noted that airlines use short-term currency hedges, which may limit the immediate effect of exchange-rate changes.

Fleet expansion remains part of strategy

The capacity adjustments come alongside LATAM's plans to introduce new Embraer aircraft and expand routes in Brazil. That combination points to a more selective network approach: near-term schedules may be reduced where costs are most difficult, while fleet and route investments continue in areas the group considers strategically attractive.
