nLIGHT stock: Defense award strengthens growth outlook

- nLIGHT reported second-quarter revenue of USD 82.6 million, up 34 percent year over year.
- The Joint Laser Weapon System agreement carries a potential ceiling above USD 600 million, while initial funded work is expected to be largely unaffected by the supply issue.
- Management guided to third-quarter revenue of USD 63 million to USD 73 million after excluding roughly USD 17 million of delayed product shipments.
nLIGHT's latest quarterly update highlights a growing defense opportunity but also shows why execution remains central for investors. In an earnings-call transcript published by Benzinga on October 13, 2026, management described the second quarter as a record period and discussed the recently awarded Joint Laser Weapon System, or JLWS, program.
Defense pipeline expands
Chief Executive Scott Keeney said second-quarter revenue reached USD 82.6 million, an increase of 34 percent from the same quarter a year earlier. Product revenue rose 45 percent to USD 59 million, while aerospace and defense revenue reached a record USD 57.3 million, up 41 percent year over year.
Management said nLIGHT's HADES high-energy laser platform was instrumental in winning the JLWS agreement with the US Department of Defense. The multi-year contract has a ceiling above USD 600 million and covers the development, integration and delivery of multiple high-energy laser weapon systems. The initial funded work is expected to begin contributing revenue in the current quarter, with a more meaningful ramp expected in 2027.
The contract ceiling represents potential funding rather than guaranteed revenue. Management also described JLWS and the existing HELSI 2 program as separate contracts. The company said HELSI 2 remains on track for delivery of a one-megawatt laser late in 2026.
Supply constraints cloud near term
The near-term outlook is less certain because nLIGHT is facing delays in obtaining some optics and other materials from Chinese suppliers. Management said the issue primarily affects commercial products and that the initial JLWS work should be largely unaffected. However, some defense products use commercial components, leaving limited indirect exposure.
nLIGHT guided to third-quarter revenue of USD 63 million to USD 73 million. The range excludes approximately USD 17 million of product revenue that management had expected to ship during the quarter but now expects to deliver in later periods. The company said demand and backlog remain strong, while the timing of execution is less certain.
Investor context
For investors, the update presents a mixed operating picture: defense demand and a large potential program improve medium-term visibility, while supply-chain delays can affect factory utilization, product margins and the timing of revenue recognition. The JLWS ceiling should therefore be viewed alongside funding, production and delivery milestones rather than as booked sales.
