- Management cited higher LTL revenue per hundredweight and reported 99 percent on-time service.
Old Dominion Freight Line reported stronger revenue and profitability for the third quarter ended September 30, 2026. In its October 28 investor-relations release, the less-than-truckload carrier said revenue rose 13.1 percent year over year to USD 1.591 billion.
Revenue growth meets better cost control
Operating income increased 25.4 percent to USD 452.6 million, while net income rose 26.9 percent to USD 343.7 million. Diluted earnings per share reached USD 1.65, compared with USD 1.28 in the year-earlier quarter. The operating ratio improved by 280 basis points to 71.5 percent, indicating that operating expenses consumed a smaller share of revenue.
Management attributed the revenue increase primarily to a 13.3 percent rise in LTL revenue per hundredweight. That was partly offset by a 0.1 percent decline in LTL tons per day, reflecting lower shipment volumes but a 1.9 percent increase in weight per shipment. Revenue per hundredweight excluding fuel surcharges increased 5.1 percent.
Service quality and capital allocation
Old Dominion said its service metrics remained strong, with 99 percent on-time service and a claims ratio of 0.1 percent during the quarter. Net cash provided by operating activities was USD 469.5 million, while capital expenditures totaled USD 67.1 million.
The company expects total 2026 capital expenditures of approximately USD 380 million, including spending on real estate and service-center expansion, tractors and trailers, and information technology. Through the first nine months, it used USD 400.6 million for share repurchases and paid USD 180.7 million in cash dividends.
