Shaanxi Coal and Chemical Industry stock draws attention after stronger nine-month earnings. Higher coal prices lifted margins and cash flow.

Earnings and coal margins

  • Coal-related gross profit expanded as higher thermal coal prices lifted selling prices faster than costs.
  • Operating cash flow improved strongly during the first nine months, while electricity sales continued to grow.
  • Management also announced an interim dividend and faces risks from weaker coal prices, demand and mine-safety incidents.

Shaanxi Coal Industry reported stronger profitability for the first nine months of 2026, with coal margins benefiting from higher thermal coal prices. The results were released on October 27, according to Futu, which cited Shenwan Hongyuan Research.

Revenue for the first three quarters reached 122.766 billion renminbi, up 3.97 percent from a year earlier. Net profit attributable to shareholders rose 34.23 percent to 17.065 billion renminbi, while profit after non-recurring items increased 34.98 percent to 15.514 billion renminbi.

Coal prices drive earnings

Coal-related gross profit climbed 34.15 percent to 41.595 billion renminbi. Production reached 135 million tonnes, an increase of 3.92 percent, while total sales fell 5.73 percent to 178 million tonnes, mainly because of lower trading-coal volumes.

In the third quarter, the average selling price rose 27.80 percent to 683.88 renminbi per tonne. Average cost increased 8.57 percent to 382.43 renminbi per tonne, lifting gross margin per tonne by 64.85 percent to 301.45 renminbi.

Cash flow and dividend support

Operating cash flow reached 40.923 billion renminbi in the first nine months, 47.61 percent above the prior-year period. Electricity generation rose 6.24 percent to 33.52 billion kilowatt-hours, while electricity sales increased 6.51 percent to 31.52 billion kilowatt-hours.

The company announced an interim dividend of 0.058 renminbi per share on October 22, with a total payout of 562 million renminbi. The research commentary retained its earnings forecasts and identified falling coal prices, weaker downstream demand and safety incidents as key risks.

What investors should watch

The earnings profile remains tied to the relationship between coal prices, production and sales volumes. Higher realized prices supported profitability in the reported period, but a reversal in the coal market could put pressure on margins even if output remains firm.
