Taekwang Group is looking for new growth engines as competition intensifies in its traditional textile and petrochemical businesses. The strategic focus emerged during a memorial event for founder and former chairman Lee Imyong, whose death 30 years ago was commemorated in Seoul on Monday, October 26, 2026.
In a report published on Wednesday, October 28, The Asia Business Daily said more than 270 executives and employees from Taekwang affiliates attended the memorial service. Lee Ho-jin, an adviser to Taekwang Industries, said securing new growth engines was the group's most urgent task.
Expansion remains central to strategy
Taekwang's current transformation draws on the founder's earlier decision to move beyond textiles. The group entered electronics, finance and petrochemicals, and the petrochemical business became a core operation within a decade, according to the report.
Management is now looking at areas including hotels, beauty and pharmaceuticals through mergers and acquisitions. The strategy indicates an effort to reduce reliance on mature core markets, although the report did not provide new financial targets or a timetable for the expansion.
Financial discipline supports investment
The report also linked Taekwang's investment capacity to a long-standing policy of limiting debt and retaining funds for future projects. It said the group has maintained a debt ratio in the 10 percent range while China's industrial overcapacity has weighed on South Korean petrochemical profitability.
The account presents financial discipline as a strategic advantage during the downturn, but the group's ability to turn diversification into higher returns will depend on execution in the new businesses.
