Telephone and Data Systems expanded its rural broadband footprint on October 8, 2026, when subsidiary TDS Telecommunications completed a fiber project in Monroe County, Tennessee. The company said the upgrade brings all-fiber connections to more than 3,000 locations through a public-private partnership.
According to TDS Telecom, the project covers communities including Tellico Plains, Coker Creek, Vonore and Ball Play. The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development supported the work with federal American Rescue Plan Act funding, while TDS financed the remaining project costs.
More capacity for underserved markets
The upgraded network offers symmetrical broadband, meaning upload and download speeds are identical. Residential plans start at 300 Mbps, while qualifying addresses can receive speeds of up to 8 Gigabit. Business customers can purchase a dedicated 10 Gigabit connection with a service-level agreement.
The project gives TDS additional fiber infrastructure in smaller communities, where customer adoption and construction costs will determine the financial return. For investors, the announcement points to continued execution in network modernization rather than an immediate change to consolidated earnings.
Business model and competitive position
Telephone and Data Systems provides broadband, video and voice services through TDS Telecom and leases tower space through Array Digital Infrastructure. The group is headquartered in Chicago, while TDS Telecom is headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, and focuses on small and mid-sized urban, suburban and rural U.S. communities. A company profile places TDS as a smaller, rural-focused operator than Comcast, Charter Communications and Lumen Technologies, whose businesses have broader scale or stronger enterprise and cable exposure.
