- MARC Ratings maintained its top corporate credit assessment with a stable outlook.
- Electricity demand and data centre projects are supporting growth across Malaysia's power system.
- Large grid and generation investments will remain central to the company's energy-transition strategy.
Tenaga Nasional Berhad's credit profile remains strong as MARC Ratings affirmed the Malaysian utility's AAA corporate credit rating with a stable outlook on Friday, October 30, 2026.
Credit strength meets investment needs
MARC said the assessment reflects Tenaga Nasional's monopoly over electricity transmission in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, its leading position in power generation and distribution, and the support provided by Malaysia's Incentive-Based Regulation framework. The framework allows fuel-cost recovery and regulated returns on capital expenditure, while government support for national energy security provides additional backing.
Revenue increased 19.4 percent to MYR 67.7 billion in 2025, according to MARC, helped by higher electricity demand and tariffs under Regulatory Period 4. Revenue then rose 7.5 percent year on year to MYR 35.3 billion in the first half of 2026, while electricity demand increased 7.7 percent. Commercial and domestic customers, including Malaysia's growing data centre sector, were the main demand drivers.
Cash flow and leverage remain central
Operating cash flow fell to MYR 15.8 billion in 2025 after MYR 6.3 billion of additional tax payments related to historical assessments. It stood at MYR 12.0 billion in the first half of 2026, while cash reached MYR 15.3 billion at the end of June. Borrowings were MYR 60.9 billion and the debt-to-equity ratio was 1.14 times, making capital discipline important as investment increases.
Tenaga Nasional is expected to expand and modernise its transmission and distribution networks, add generation capacity and support Malaysia's net-zero transition. MARC said debt-to-OPBITDA remained healthy at 2.83 times, with internal cash generation and scheduled debt amortisation helping to keep leverage manageable.
Malaysia's regulated utility position
Tenaga Nasional operates Malaysia's electricity transmission, generation and distribution infrastructure, with transmission coverage across Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah. Its regulated model links returns to approved capital expenditure and supports fuel-cost recovery. The company is positioned as a national utility rather than a specialised renewable-energy developer, with data centre demand and grid investment shaping its expansion priorities.
