- United Spirits is leaning on premiumisation as inflation and state policy changes pressure its mass-market portfolio.
- The company's Prestige and Above portfolio grew, while the Popular segment contracted sharply in the September quarter.
- Higher brand investment and input costs remain important factors for margins and the outlook.
United Spirits reported a 2 percent decline in second-quarter profit on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, as weaker sales of lower-priced brands and regulatory changes weighed on performance. Reuters reported that the September-quarter result was affected by weak demand in the lower-priced portfolio.
Mass-market demand remains weak
United Spirits is contending with inflation-sensitive consumers and policy changes in Maharashtra and Karnataka. The Economic Times reported on October 31 that the Popular segment's net sales fell 22.7 percent to INR 181 crore in the quarter, while the Prestige and Above portfolio grew 6 percent and represented 94 percent of revenue.
The company is relying on premium brands to offset pressure at the lower end of the market. Management said demand among lower-income consumers had weakened, while higher-priced consumer groups remained more resilient.
Costs and regulation shape outlook
Input costs are adding to the pressure on profitability. The Economic Times reported that higher costs for glass, energy, packaging and logistics added about INR 50 crore during the quarter, while rising extra neutral alcohol prices created another headwind. United Spirits expects lower Scotch import duties under the India-UK free trade agreement to help offset some of those costs in the next quarter.
The company also faces scrutiny related to Scotch import classifications. That investigation and state-level alcohol policies remain material risks for sales and realisations, particularly in the mass-market portfolio.
United Spirits business profile

Its business spans mass-market and premium spirits, with brands such as Smirnoff and McDowell's referenced in the company's market commentary. The company is positioned as a broad-based national spirits operator, while its current strategy places greater emphasis on premiumisation and higher-priced categories.
