A Dual Institutional Boost for Bitcoin's Infrastructure

Two significant announcements today could reshape the structural landscape of the Bitcoin market. In a coordinated display of institutional adoption, BNP Paribas is launching regulated Bitcoin investment products for millions of clients, while Block's Square division is enabling Bitcoin payments by default for its global merchant network. These parallel developments arrived on the same day.

Square Enables Bitcoin Payments by Default

In a major move for cryptocurrency utility, Block's Square business unit has activated Bitcoin payments via the Lightning Network as a standard feature for millions of merchants worldwide, removing its previous status as an optional add-on. Merchants retain the ability to disable these transactions or opt for automatic conversion to US dollars. The initial rollout focuses on in-person payments processed through Square terminals, with online payment functionality scheduled to follow later in 2026.

BNP Paribas Integrates Crypto into Traditional Portfolios

Simultaneously, Europe's largest EU bank is introducing access to six Exchange-Traded Notes (ETNs) tracking Bitcoin and Ethereum, starting today. Issued by established asset managers including BlackRock's iShares, Invesco, WisdomTree, and VanEck, these products allow the bank's clients to gain regulated exposure to digital asset price movements through their conventional securities accounts, without the need to hold the tokens directly. This offering operates under the MiFID-II regulatory framework.

The scale of this initiative is substantial. BNP Paribas manages assets worth €2.8 trillion. The decision by an institution of this magnitude to actively distribute Bitcoin-linked products to retail customers represents a qualitative leap beyond previous niche offerings. The bank plans to extend availability to wealth management clients outside France, although a specific timeline for this expansion has not yet been finalized.

Price Action Lags Behind Strengthening Fundamentals

Despite these bullish developments, Bitcoin's current price remains approximately 25% below its 52-week high of $124,773. Trading around $69,000 at the start of March, the asset has seen its price weaken throughout the month even as the regulatory environment has grown more favorable. This disconnect between improving fundamentals and subdued price performance has characterized recent trading.

A key structural factor provides further context: the 20 millionth Bitcoin was mined on March 10. This milestone means 95.24% of the total Bitcoin supply that will ever exist is already in circulation. The remaining supply of roughly one million BTC will be distributed over the next 114 years—a supply argument that is not lost on long-term oriented buyers. This dynamic appears to be reflected in the strategy of MicroStrategy, which alone acquired approximately 45,000 BTC in the past 30 days. During the same period, all other publicly-listed treasury companies combined purchased less than 1,000 BTC.
