Abivax Stock Jumps Nearly 37% as Ulcerative Colitis Data Ease Safety Fears and Bolster Efficacy Case

Shares in French biotech Abivax rocketed on Tuesday, climbing 37% to €114.90 after the company unveiled fresh results from its ABTECT maintenance study for the lead drug candidate Obefazimod. The stock’s explosive move — following a prior leap of around 25% to €104.60 at one point — reflected a two-pronged relief rally: the data both showed robust efficacy in a notoriously hard-to-treat patient population and alleviated the safety overhang that had spooked the market back in June.
The latest analysis focused on patients with refractory ulcerative colitis who either did not respond to initial treatment or suffered a relapse. Among non-responders, 37.2% achieved clinical remission on the 50 mg dose of Obefazimod, while 34.5% saw endoscopic remission. Roughly 62% of the same group recorded a clinical improvement, and nearly half showed endoscopic improvement. For those who had a relapse, the drug proved equally potent: almost 70% responded to retreatment, with remission rates hitting around 45% across the two treatment arms.
Safety data, compiled across a database of 1,704 patient-years, also fell within the expected range for a colitis population, dispelling concerns that had emerged after early observations. Four cases of non-melanoma skin cancer and two other malignancies were recorded — but nearly all occurred in patients with known risk factors, reassuring analysts that the drug’s risk profile remains manageable.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Abivax?
The improving risk-reward calculus prompted several broker revisions. Stifel and Oddo BHF hold their “Buy” and “Outperform” ratings, with price targets of €115 and €120 respectively. BTIG went further, lifting its target to $175 from a prior level, citing a higher probability of success for Obefazimod. The stock now trades roughly 20% above its 50-day moving average, with a relative strength index close to 66 — strong but not yet overextended. It still sits about 12% below the 52-week high of €130.80.
Management kept the regulatory roadmap unchanged: a new drug application is slated for submission to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in the fourth quarter of 2026. Meanwhile, a phase 2b trial of Obefazimod in Crohn’s disease, another chronic inflammatory bowel condition, is ongoing, with top-line results expected by mid-2027. As commercialization edges closer, the market’s attention is now squarely on whether the FDA deems the data package sufficient for approval in the second half of next year.
