The German wind project developer ABO Wind secured three new onshore wind awards in June, bringing total capacity to 61.4 megawatts, while simultaneously offloading a Colombian solar portfolio to free up cash. Yet these operational successes are doing little to calm investors, as the company races to finalise a restructuring financing arrangement before the end of July – a deadline that will determine whether its certified turnaround plan holds together.

Shares have wobbled in recent sessions, sliding 4.7% on Tuesday to €3.44 before edging down a further 2.2% to €3.54 the following day. The market capitalisation has shrunk to around €33 million, a level that reflects deep scepticism about the company’s balance sheet. Technical indicators underscore the pressure: the relative strength index has fallen to 34.3, placing the stock in oversold territory, while annualised volatility of nearly 75% signals high anxiety among traders.

At the heart of the crisis is a 2025 group net loss of roughly €170 million, driven by shifting market conditions, compressed margins and impairment charges. That loss triggered a mandatory notification under section 92 of the German Stock Corporation Act in May, confirming that half of ABO Wind’s share capital had been wiped out. An extraordinary general meeting on July 9 formally acknowledged the situation, though no binding resolutions were passed. The audited 2025 financial statements are expected in the third quarter of 2026, but the immediate concern is the financing deadline.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ABO WIND AG?

The company has been operating under a standstill agreement with its lending partners, which expires at the end of July. If a viable follow-on financing is not in place by then, the certified restructuring ability that an outside expert recently confirmed will become moot. That certification explicitly hinges on reaching a sustainable deal with financing partners.

To strengthen its hand in the negotiations, ABO Wind has brought in heavyweight external advisors. Boston Consulting Group is working on bolstering the equity side of the balance sheet, while Rothschild & Co is advising on the broader balance-sheet restructuring. Management continues to negotiate directly with existing financiers, racing the calendar.

Operationally, the project pipeline remains active. The three wind farm contracts awarded by the Federal Network Agency – sites in Ohlenbüttel, Hünxe and Willingen, spread across Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse – are scheduled for commissioning between autumn 2027 and autumn 2028. On the sales front, ABO Wind has completed a series of disposals including a repowering project in Saarland, a single-turbine project in Großenlüder, and the Colombian solar portfolio which was taken over by the NOVVA group. That 37.8 MW solar cluster, located in Colombia’s Andean highlands, is slated to start operations in early 2028. Proceeds from these deals are being channelled directly into liquidity, propping up the restructuring.

Looking beyond the immediate crunch, ABO Wind aims to transform itself from a pure project developer into an independent power producer, retaining and operating assets rather than selling them. The model promises more predictable revenue streams but demands significantly more capital – making the July financing decision even more pivotal. Without a funding agreement, the company cannot lay the groundwork for that strategic shift. For now, the operational engine is running, but the question of who will pay for the next stage remains very much unanswered.
