Aixtron shares rocketed nearly 10% on Friday, snapping a seven-session losing streak that had wiped 28.5% from the stock. The trigger came from Metzler, which more than doubled its price target on the semiconductor equipment maker to €47 from €25, while keeping a “Hold” rating. The move caught the market’s imagination — the stock closed at €44.80 on Thursday and opened Friday at €49.22, pushing it back above its 100-day moving average of €42.56.

Just days earlier, investors had been bailing out. The stock had fallen for seven consecutive trading days, weighed down by sectorwide profit-taking after a blistering first half. From this year’s high in mid-June, Aixtron had dropped 28.53%, and the relative strength index had slumped to 33.6 — flirting with oversold territory. The annualised volatility of 76.54% underscored the jittery mood. Then came Metzler’s revised assessment, which analysts described as a belated recognition of the company’s explosive run: the shares have still gained 151.44% since January 1, and over twelve months the advance stands at 197.49%.

The broader backdrop for Aixtron remains a study in contrasts. While the secondary market was turning bearish, Berlin was doubling down. In early July, the German economics ministry notified the European Commission of 14 new projects under the Important Project of Common European Interest on Microelectronics (IPCEI AST). The programme unlocks up to €3.8 billion in state funding for domestic semiconductor initiatives. As a leading builder of deposition systems for gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC) components, Aixtron stands to benefit from the wave of new fab construction that the subsidies are designed to encourage.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Aixtron?

Operationally, the company has been active on multiple fronts. It recently booked orders from Lumentum for its G10-AsP systems, and forged a strategic partnership with ROHM Semiconductor. Both deals strengthen Aixtron’s hand in optical networking and next-generation power semiconductors — the technologies that underpin efficient data centres and electric vehicles. The strong demand for memory chips, highlighted by Micron Technology’s record results, has also reinforced confidence in the investment cycle for artificial-intelligence infrastructure.

Yet the share price has not fully recovered. Friday’s rally, while dramatic, still leaves the stock 21.47% below its 52-week high of €62.68. The 50-day moving average of €52.93 remains out of reach, and the RSI after the bounce sits at 43.0 — neutral, but not yet indicating a renewed uptrend. The annualised volatility has widened to 82.13%, a reminder that Aixtron remains a high-beta name.

All eyes now turn to July 30, when Aixtron will release its half-year report. Investors want to see whether the hefty order backlog translates into revenue and margin expansion. Particular focus will fall on the ramp-up of the G10 series and progress with the optoelectronics orders. The €3.8 billion subsidy umbrella offers a long-term floor, but the near-term test will be whether management can deliver the hard numbers that turned Metzler’s target from a lagging indicator into a plausible floor.
