Alphabet Inc. shares, trading near €289.80, are perched just below their all-time high as the company’s market capitalization recently breached the $4 trillion mark. This remarkable 118% annual gain now faces a critical test from three converging fronts: a landmark regulatory challenge in Europe, a pivotal cloud conference, and first-quarter earnings that must justify unprecedented spending.

The most immediate pressure stems from Brussels. On April 16, the European Commission issued preliminary measures under the Digital Markets Act that could force Google to share detailed search and click data—including from AI chatbots with search functions—with competitors. The commission explicitly classifies systems like ChatGPT or Perplexity as direct rivals to Google Search. Failure to comply risks fines of up to 10% of global annual revenue, a potential penalty exceeding $35 billion for Alphabet. Google contends it has already provided a functional, anonymized dataset for rivals. A final decision is expected by late July 2026. Separately, a separate probe into alleged manipulation of advertising auctions threatens additional penalties of at least €9.5 billion.

This regulatory offensive directly threatens the high-margin European advertising business just as Alphabet prepares to showcase its technological counterpunch. The Google Cloud Next '26 conference kicks off in Las Vegas this Monday, with a focus on moving "Agentic Cloud" AI from experimentation to productive enterprise deployment. The event is a crucial sentiment gauge ahead of the company's April 29 earnings report.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Alphabet?

Those quarterly results are the fundamental linchpin. Analysts are forecasting revenue of approximately $107 billion, a 19% year-over-year increase. All eyes will be on the cloud division, which is expected to show around 30% growth. This follows a stellar fourth quarter in 2025, where Google Cloud revenue surged 48% to nearly $17.7 billion. The division's backlog of orders now stands at a massive $243 billion.

The immense spending required to fuel this growth is coming into sharp focus. For fiscal 2026, management has outlined capital expenditures between $175 billion and $185 billion, primarily for data centers and custom chips. This follows an investment of roughly $91 billion in 2025. CEO Sundar Pichai has explicitly prioritized securing AI capacity over short-term free cash flow pressure. A recent long-term power supply deal with utility NiSource for a major data center in Indiana, set to begin in summer 2026, underscores this infrastructure commitment.

While a broad majority of analysts maintain a buy rating on the stock, price targets reflect nuanced expectations. DBS Bank raised its target to $400, whereas Stifel Nicolaus slightly lowered its target to $387. With the stock's Relative Strength Index nearing 69, approaching overbought territory, expectations are sky-high. To defend its valuation and sustain momentum, Alphabet must demonstrate that its Gemini AI models and new integrated features like the "Nano Banana" suite are translating into tangible margin expansion within its cloud and advertising engines. Any disappointment on April 29 could shift investor focus squarely onto the company's massive cost burden.
