Advanced Micro Devices is living a paradox this week. The chipmaker has unveiled a string of multibillion-dollar infrastructure agreements that would be headline-grabbing in any normal market. But this is not a normal market. A sector-wide rout in technology stocks has wiped out those gains on the tape, leaving AMD shares down more than 16% over the past seven trading sessions — even as the company locks in long-term revenue streams that would make most rivals envious.

The stock closed at €399.60 after an 8% single-day plunge, and now sits 21.91% below its 52-week high of €511.70 reached in late June. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index has shed roughly a quarter of its value in a month, while the Nasdaq-100 has slipped into technical correction territory. Investors are increasingly jittery about the ballooning debt loads that Big Tech is taking on to build out AI data centers — Alphabet, for instance, posted its first negative operating cash flow in the second quarter after hiking its capital expenditure forecast to as much as $205 billion.

A Flurry of Deals That Reshape AMD’s Role

The most eye-catching announcement came from Core Scientific, the data center operator. Over 15 years, AMD has secured 529 megawatts of AI compute capacity across five U.S. sites in Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama and Georgia. The base revenue from this deal exceeds $14 billion. AMD is leasing 377 megawatts directly, with another 152 megawatts routed through a cloud provider backed by AMD credit support. In return, the company receives warrants for up to 30 million Core Scientific shares at an exercise price of $23.47. The first capacity is expected to go live in the first half of 2027 at the Pecos, Texas facility.

Hard on its heels came a partnership with AI lab Anthropic. AMD is investing up to $5 billion, and in exchange Anthropic will deploy up to two gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 chips via the Helios platform, with the first gigawatt tranche coming online in the first half of 2027. The two sides will also collaborate on optimizing AMD’s ROCm software for Anthropic’s Claude language model. Taken together with the six-gigawatt Meta partnership announced in February, these deals signal that AMD is aggressively targeting a bigger slice of the AI accelerator market — where it currently holds an estimated 4.5% share against Nvidia’s commanding lead.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying AMD?

AMD has also kicked off volume production of its new EPYC “Venice” server processors, fabricated on a 2-nanometer process at TSMC facilities in Taiwan and Arizona. Additionally, the company has signed two memorandums of understanding with South Korea to expand semiconductor infrastructure there.

Technical Signals Tell a More Nuanced Story

For all the headline anxiety, the technical picture is not uniformly bearish. The 14-day relative strength index stands at 39.1, approaching oversold territory — a sign that selling pressure may be exhausting itself. While the stock is trading 10.89% below its 50-day moving average of €448.41, it remains a comfortable 48.51% above its 200-day moving average. That spread suggests the long-term uptrend is intact, even if short-term nerves are frayed.

Compared with the 52-week low of €126.50, the stock is still up 215.89%. The annualized volatility of 70.60% looks high at first glance, but it largely reflects the typical swings of semiconductor stocks during sector-wide rotations — not a fundamental problem with the company itself.

Analyst Confidence Holds Firm

Despite the price rout, most analysts remain bullish. Mizuho’s Vijay Rakesh reiterated a buy rating and raised his price target to $625. Goldman Sachs also rates the stock a buy with a $640 target. Of 45 analysts covering AMD, 35 recommend “Strong Buy,” with a median price target around $577. For the current fiscal year, earnings per share are expected to hit $6.27, a roughly 92% increase year over year.

The consensus for the second quarter calls for revenue of $11.30 billion and EPS of $1.61 — following a first quarter in which AMD beat expectations with $10.25 billion in revenue and $1.37 in EPS. Options markets are pricing in a swing of more than 12% on the day after the earnings release, a reflection of just how uncertain investors are despite the torrent of positive news.

AMD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

A Correction, Not a Break

For long-term investors, the current pullback looks more like a healthy correction within a multiyear uptrend than a structural break. Year-to-date, AMD is still up 117.15%, and over 12 months the gain is 160.05%. With a market capitalization of €748.19 billion, AMD is no longer an upstart challenger but a cornerstone of the global computing infrastructure.

Insider selling, including by CEO Lisa Su, has been noted by observers, though no clear signal has emerged from those transactions. The real test comes on Tuesday, August 4, when AMD reports second-quarter results. Until then, the market’s mood may remain volatile — but the underlying business momentum suggests this selloff could be more opportunity than warning.
