Ams Osram is pushing ahead with its most aggressive portfolio shake-up in years, sealing a €570m cash sale of its non-optical sensor business to Infineon. The deal, announced this week, marks the latest — and largest — step in chief executive Aldo Kamper’s drive to strip the Austrian chipmaker down to its core strength in optical sensing and digital photonics.

Under the terms of the transaction, Infineon takes over three product groups: positioning and temperature sensors, mixed-signal ASICs, and photon-counting detectors used in medical imaging and industrial automation. Roughly 230 employees from research, development and management will transfer to the Munich-based group, along with sites in Valencia, Spain; Rapperswil, Switzerland; and Hyderabad, India.

The asset sale deepens Infineon’s foothold in precision sensor technology for automotive, industrial and consumer applications — from chassis systems and robotics to glucose monitoring and computed tomography. Stephan Zizala, division president at Infineon, called the acquisition “an excellent fit” with the company’s growth strategy in sensors and radio frequency, noting that the combined intellectual property in wafer technology and mixed-signal design should unlock new product opportunities.

Ams Osram has been shedding non-core units at a rapid clip. In March it offloaded its entertainment and industry lamps division to Japan’s Ushio for €114m. Two months later, the CMOS image sensor business was sold to indie Semiconductor for roughly €40m. These disposals, together with the Infineon deal, are central to Kamper’s “Simplify” restructuring programme, which targets €200m in annual savings by 2028.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ams Osram?

The real prize for Ams Osram is a lighter debt load. The company raised fresh capital in May with a €1bn bond issuance carrying a 7.25% coupon and maturing in 2032. Proceeds were used to retire older, more expensive borrowings, meaning interest costs will drop noticeably from 2027. The improved outlook prompted Moody’s to lift its rating outlook to positive.

Investors have rewarded the clean-up. The stock surged 8.5% on Wednesday to €21.70, extending a year-to-date rally of 155.29%. That still leaves the shares about 18.7% below their 52-week high of €26.70. JPMorgan rates the stock “overweight”, betting that the automotive sector will provide fresh growth momentum as the restructuring takes hold.

Ams Osram is not walking away from every piece of the sensor business. It will continue to manufacture key components for photon-counting detectors on a fabless basis for Infineon at its remaining plant in Premstätten, Austria. The group’s own focus will narrow to optical vital-sign monitoring — particularly photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors for wearables, handled out of its Regensburg site.

Ams Osram at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

With three divestitures completed in rapid succession, the company has drawn a clear line between optical and non-optical sensing. The next test for management will be demonstrating that the debt burden is actually shrinking — a question the market will be scrutinising when the next quarterly results land.
