BYD’s Denza Z supercar rockets from zero to 100 km/h in 1.96 seconds — faster than most people can read this sentence. Yet shares of the Chinese electric-vehicle and battery giant have taken a far more leisurely trajectory, languishing more than 35% below their 52-week high even as the company unveils a parade of new models and locks down one of the world’s largest battery-storage contracts.

The stock closed at €9.58 on Friday, up 2.6% on the week but still nursing a year-to-date drop of 12.55%. Over the past twelve months the shares have shed 27.97%, leaving the company with a market capitalisation of €86.63 billion. The distance to the July 2025 peak of €14.80 stands at 35.27%, though the recovery from the June 2026 low of €8.03 amounts to 19.29%. The relative strength index of 55.8 points to neither an overbought nor oversold situation.

A Supercar That Steals the Show

The Denza Z made its world debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed from 9 to 12 July, where BYD occupied the largest single-brand footprint in the event’s 33-year history — 2,016 square metres. The all-electric performance model, built on the e³ platform, delivers 1,605 PS (1,183 kW) and a maximum torque of 1,260 Nm. The coupé variant hits 100 km/h in 2.25 seconds and tops out at 300 km/h; the track edition shaves that sprint to 1.96 seconds and pushes the top speed to 350 km/h. Prices start at £142,900 for the coupé and climb to £172,900 for the racing version. A lap-record attempt on the Nürburgring Nordschleife is already being planned.

The appearance in Goodwood also marked Denza’s formal entry into the British market. Alongside the Z, BYD presented eight other models for their European premieres, including the Dolphin G, the SHARK pickup and the Yangwang U9 Xtreme. At the opposite end of the price spectrum, the refreshed Seagull entry-level EV — marketed in Europe as the Dolphin Mini or Dolphin Surf — sold more than 125,000 units worldwide in the first five months of the year.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Desert Megadeal for Energy Storage

Far from the English countryside, BYD Energy Storage signed a contract to supply 11.275 GWh of battery capacity for Masdar’s “Round-the-Clock” project in Abu Dhabi. The overall scheme combines a 5.2-GW solar farm with a 19-GWh battery system, billed as the largest integrated solar-storage facility on the planet. BYD’s portion is a single storage station rated at 1,644 MW, using its Haohan technology built around 2,710-Ah blade batteries that operate in temperatures ranging from minus 30 to plus 55 degrees Celsius. The aim is to deliver 1 GW of continuous power.

The deal follows a separate agreement for 12.5 GWh of storage capacity in Saudi Arabia, cementing BYD’s role as a key partner for Gulf states in their energy-transition plans.

Export Engine Revs Higher

While the home market grows ever more competitive, BYD’s export machine is gathering pace. In the first quarter of 2026 the company sold 319,800 vehicles abroad, a 55% jump year-on-year. Chairman Wang Chuanfu told the annual shareholder meeting in early June that the group is targeting 1.5 million export sales for the full year — a figure he expects will be surpassed. He also forecast monthly sales gains of 20,000 to 30,000 units and declared an ambition to become the global leader in production and sales by 2030. Manufacturing sites in Brazil, Hungary, Thailand and Indonesia are being built to underpin the international push.

Analysts at Seeking Alpha and the research firm Pluang view the stock as undervalued, pointing to robust export volumes and potentially higher average selling prices in the second quarter. They cite an attractive risk-reward profile but caution that investors should keep an eye on cash flow as rapid growth brings its own financial strains.

BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

New Metal for the Home Market

At the same time, BYD is refreshing its domestic line-up. The Qin Max, a B-segment saloon, will be offered as a pure battery-electric vehicle or as a plug-in hybrid. The hybrid variant mates a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 175 kW electric motor; the EV can be ordered with either a 120 kW or 240 kW motor. Meanwhile, the SHARK pickup — already launched in Mexico in May 2024 — has appeared in Chinese regulatory filings under the Fang Cheng Bao brand, with a domestic market debut scheduled for the second half of 2026.

Mixed Signals from the Macroeconomy

China’s broader economic landscape remains uneven. GDP growth likely slowed to 4.5% in the second quarter from 5% in the previous three months, according to surveys. Exports jumped 19.4% in May, propelled by technology and automotive shipments, even as the property slump and weak domestic demand persist. For BYD, whose growth story increasingly relies on overseas markets, the export momentum is a critical lever — while the stock’s next move may depend on whether cash generation can keep pace with ambition.
