This summer, Styria is turning parks into open-air gyms. More than 700 free movement courses run from June 15 to September 13 under the “Bewegt im Park” banner, funded by the social insurance umbrella body, the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK), and the sports ministry. Last year the program drew over 130,000 participants — a jump that organizers say reflects growing demand for no-barrier wellness options.
The initiative dovetails with a milestone in corporate health strategy. Austria’s state-owned railway operator, ÖBB, has just received the BGF-Preis 2026, the country’s highest distinction for workplace health promotion. The prize is awarded every three years by the Austrian Network for Workplace Health Promotion and the Fonds Gesundes Österreich.
ÖBB embedded health management into its operations in 2007, relying on data-driven analysis rather than ad-hoc programs. The result: both sick-day rates and the proportion of early retirements due to illness have dropped markedly. Then, on January 1, 2027, Christina Rebernik becomes board member responsible for infrastructure provision, succeeding Judith Engel. Johann Pluy continues to oversee asset management, operations and digitalisation, completing the future three-person leadership team.
