A pair of developments in the past month have reshaped the landscape for Bayer, offering both a clearer legal path and a carefully calibrated olive branch to the US farmers who are central to its agricultural business. The US Supreme Court’s June 25 ruling, which narrowed the grounds for Roundup-related claims, was followed weeks later by the quiet withdrawal of an antidumping petition from Bayer’s glyphosate subsidiary Ruveon — a move that agricultural groups quickly welcomed as a relief for growers already facing rising input costs.

The court decision marked one of the most significant legal victories for Bayer in its years-long glyphosate saga, prompting analysts to lift price targets on the stock. But the antidumping reversal, coming after resistance from farm lobbies, carried its own strategic weight. Ruveon, which accounts for around 60% of US-made glyphosate, had filed the petition against Chinese imports in late June but pulled it back in July. Matt Frostic, first vice president of the National Corn Growers Association, described the retreat as an improvement at the Corn Congress meeting in July, while cautioning that the cost gap versus Brazilian farmers remained wider than expected, according to an NCGA study.

At the bourse, Bayer’s shares have reflected the shifting sentiment. After surging to a 52-week high of €53.86 on July 3, the stock has since pulled back. In recent trading it was hovering near €47, a level that still leaves it roughly 27% above its August 2025 trough of €25.09. Over the trailing 30 days the equity has gained 23.68%, placing it at the top of the DAX’s momentum rankings for that period. The 200-day moving average sits at €38.31, more than 22% below the current price, while the relative strength index of 54.5 suggests the move has not yet become overextended — though the annualized volatility of over 62% underscores how jittery the market remains on the name.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Bayer?

That rally has been accompanied by a reduction in one notable investor’s stake. On July 21, French asset manager Amundi S.A. disclosed that its voting rights in Bayer had slipped to 2.96%, representing 29.1 million shares, from 3.09% previously. The disclosure, effective July 14, places Amundi just below the 3% reporting threshold among a total of 982.4 million voting rights. The move may reflect profit-taking after the stock’s sharp run, but it also leaves the company with a smaller, still-relevant institutional backing as it heads into its second-quarter earnings.

Investors now face a test of whether the legal and operational tailwinds have begun to translate into the hard numbers. Bayer reported first-quarter 2026 earnings per share of €2.81, more than double the €1.32 from the prior-year period, though revenue slipped 2.42% to €13.41 billion. The second-quarter results, due August 4, will be scrutinised for signs that the Roundup relief is feeding through to the bottom line — and for any commentary on whether the decline in agricultural prices is stabilising.

The withdrawal of the antidumping petition, meanwhile, may help Bayer shore up relations with the US farmers whose loyalty is critical to its crop-science division. The industry groups that cheered the move — including the National Corn Growers Association, the American Soybean Association and the National Association of Wheat Growers — are the same customers Bayer needs on its side as it works to defend its position as the largest US glyphosate supplier. The broader tableau, then, is one of two carefully managed fronts: legal risks diminished, and a commercial flashpoint defused, just as the market turns its attention to whether the underlying business can match the stock’s recent enthusiasm.
