The narrative around BYD has taken a sharp turn. After months of being dragged down by a punishing home market and a lost lead to Tesla, the Chinese giant has flipped the script — not by fixing China, but by making it matter less. Shares rallied 7.38% on Friday to close at €9.58, clawing back 19.29% from the €8.03 52-week low set on June 30, though they remain 35.27% below the year’s peak of €14.80 and still down 12.55% year to date.

The catalyst was a seismic shift in the sales mix. In June, BYD delivered 403,472 vehicles worldwide, a modest 5.5% year-on-year gain. But the composition tells a different story. Domestic sales in China collapsed 22% to just 228,123 units, while exports surged 95% to 175,349 — now accounting for 43% of the monthly total. This is no longer a side business. It is the new growth formula.

Those export figures powered BYD to reclaim the global crown for pure battery-electric vehicle sales in the second quarter. The Shenzhen-based manufacturer delivered 557,090 BEVs, comfortably ahead of Tesla’s 480,126. It’s a decisive victory after losing the top spot early in the year, and it underscores how aggressively the company is pushing into Europe, Southeast Asia, and Latin America.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Further proof of product strength came from the Seal 08 launch. Orders opened on July 2, and within 30 hours the company had racked up 65,000 binding orders. The top dual-motor variant packs 694 horsepower, hits 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds, and offers a CLTC range of 905 kilometres — helped by a second-generation Blade battery and an 800-volt charging system. Notably, 65% of orders are for the pure electric version, signaling a gradual pivot away from plug-in hybrids as China’s tax breaks for PHEVs end on January 1, 2027.

Overseas expansion is accelerating on multiple fronts. BYD is scouting a second European car plant, with teams evaluating potential sites in Spain and France; a decision is expected soon. The first plant in Szeged, Hungary, is still under construction and on track for mass production in the fourth quarter of 2026. The company is also building its dealer network in Canada and recently shipped 5,000 vehicles to Australia. Not all doors are open: South Korea has excluded BYD from certain state subsidies, and the EU is deep in high-stakes negotiations with China over a €380 billion trade deficit that could directly hit BYD’s biggest overseas market.

Technically, the stock still has hurdles. The 50-day moving average at €9.96 and the 200-day average at €10.76 both sit above the current price, acting as resistance. The relative strength index of 56.6 leaves room for further gains before overbought territory, but with 30-day annualized volatility at 40.4%, the shares are vulnerable to any headline out of Brussels or Beijing. The €10 mark is the next psychological battleground, and the outcome will depend on whether the export strategy can hold up under the pressure of looming trade talks.
