Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) has released its 2025 financial figures, delivering a performance that impressed the market. The world's leading battery manufacturer reported a net profit of 72.2 billion CNY, marking a substantial year-on-year increase of 42%. Following the announcement, the company's shares saw significant gains, currently trading approximately 17% above their 52-week low.

Broad-Based Financial and Operational Growth

The company achieved annual revenue of 423.7 billion CNY for 2025, representing growth of 17%. A primary driver was the core lithium-ion battery business, where sales volume surged by 39% to reach 661 GWh. While the electric vehicle (EV) sector remained crucial, the energy storage segment emerged as a particularly powerful growth engine, now generating higher margins than the traditional EV battery division.

CATL's sustained commitment to innovation is a key contributor to these results. The company invested 22.1 billion CNY into research and development in 2025 alone. Over the past decade, cumulative R&D spending has exceeded 90 billion CNY. This strategic focus continues to pay dividends: CATL has maintained its position as the global leader in the EV battery market for nine consecutive years, commanding a 39.2% share. It also holds the top spot in the global energy storage sector with a 30.4% market share.

Strategic Pivot Toward Energy Storage

The energy storage business is gaining strategic prominence. CATL's Chief Legal Officer, John H. Kwon, stated the company's long-term goal is to achieve a balanced 50:50 revenue split between EV batteries and energy storage systems. Given the segment's currently superior profitability, this strategic priority is clearly defined.

On the production front, CATL's global manufacturing capacity stood at 772 GWh by the end of 2025, with an additional 321 GWh under construction. Its German plant is operating profitably, and the first phase of its Hungarian facility has commenced operations. Analysts at Haitong International recently reaffirmed their "Outperform" rating on the stock, highlighting an impressive capacity utilization rate of 96.9%.

Future Roadmap: Solid-State Battery Development

CATL is already making concrete progress on next-generation technology. In early March, the company filed a patent for solid-state battery technology with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The new technology utilizes fluorine-containing lithium salts and sulfide electrolytes to enhance battery lifespan and charging speed. Cells boasting an energy density of 500 Wh/kg are already in pilot production, with small-scale series manufacturing targeted for 2027.

Complementing this growth narrative is a shareholder-friendly dividend proposal. The board has recommended a distribution of 69.57 CNY per ten shares, amounting to a total payout of over 31.5 billion CNY. This represents roughly half of the annual net profit, signaling that CATL remains committed to returning value to shareholders even amidst its significant investment agenda.
