The Florida Atlantic University has just ordered a D-Wave system for $20 million, and that same company also locked down a $10 million cloud deal with an unnamed large customer. On paper, these are the kind of wins that should lift a stock. Instead, D-Wave Quantum shares tumbled roughly 8% on Sunday, pulled down by a sector-wide rout that also hit rivals IonQ and Rigetti. Investors are taking profits after a blistering run, and the gap between headline revenue and market valuation is becoming uncomfortably wide.

The order book grew in the first quarter, and the company also secured $1.57 million from the National Science Foundation to supply components for a research project at Yale University.
The real firepower, however, could come from Washington. D-Wave is in line for up to $100 million under the CHIPS Act, and two executive orders are applying pressure from the top: one requires functional quantum computers for federal labs by 2028, the other mandates new cryptographic standards across all government agencies by 2031. If those funds flow on schedule, they could stabilise the stock at these levels. If they stall, the disconnect between a $8 billion valuation and a sub-$50 million revenue base will only grow louder.
The broader quantum computing market is projected to reach $8 billion by 2033, growing at a compound annual rate of 22%. D-Wave is betting that its dual-platform approach — annealing and gate-model — will capture a meaningful share of that expansion. For now, though, the stock remains a tug-of-war between institutional profit-takers and speculative momentum traders, with government cheques and a university deal serving as the only tangible anchors in a sea of volatility.
