D-Wave Quantum has pulled off a rare double: two separate government funding commitments in the span of five days. The quantum computing pioneer secured a $100 million equity investment from the US Department of Commerce under the CHIPS and Science Act on May 21, followed by a second tranche of funding for its superconducting qubit fabrication project from the NORDTECH semiconductor consortium on May 26. Shares climbed more than 66% over three sessions as the news broke, before easing 3.87% to €24.82 on Tuesday. Even with that pullback, the stock still shows a seven-day gain of 58.3%.

The market's enthusiasm clashed with a deeply contradictory quarterly report. For the first quarter of 2026, D-Wave posted revenue of just $2.9 million — an 81% collapse from the year-ago period. The net loss widened to $18.4 million from $5.4 million. Yet bookings — an indicator of future revenue — soared to $33.4 million, a 1,994% leap from $1.6 million in the same quarter last year. Remaining performance obligations climbed 563% to $42.4 million. The company sits on a cash pile of $588.4 million, giving it ample runway to weather the current revenue trough.

The first government injection follows an unusual structure: D-Wave will issue shares worth $100 million to the Commerce Department in exchange for a non-controlling minority stake, diluting existing shareholders in the process. The award is part of a broader $2.013 billion federal initiative backing nine quantum computing companies. IBM received $1 billion under the same program, GlobalFoundries $375 million, and peers Rigetti Computing and Infleqtion each $100 million. TD Cowen has identified D-Wave as one of the three biggest beneficiaries of the CHIPS Act quantum spending.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?

The second grant, awarded through NORDTECH — a New York-based regional semiconductor research hub — funds the next phase of the SQFab project (Improved Materials for Superconducting Qubits with Scalable Fabrication). D-Wave's subsidiary Quantum Circuits LLC will receive a slice of the more than $25 million distributed across four programs that met first-year milestones. The project targets scalable technologies for quantum error correction, a crucial step toward practical gate-model quantum computers. D-Wave acquired Quantum Circuits in January 2026 to complement its established annealing technology with gate-model systems.

Amid the financial whiplash, CEO Alan Baratz took the extraordinary step of addressing skeptics in an 8-K filing. He defended the company's quantum supremacy results published in Science, arguing that classical simulations could not reproduce the hardest problem instances and that those would require nearly a million years of computation on today's supercapacitors. The defense came as the stock's relative strength index hit 70.1, firmly in overbought territory, suggesting the rally may need time to consolidate before further gains.

Investors will get their first formal update on June 1 at D-Wave's inaugural Investor Day at the New York Stock Exchange, followed by the Qubits Europe conference in London on June 18. The company is expected to address the timeline for converting its record backlog into recognized revenue, the dilution impact of the government's equity stake, and its progress integrating Quantum Circuits’ gate-model technology into a unified product roadmap.
