DeFi Technologies: A CEO’s Open Letter Meets a Market That Won’t Listen
Published on 07/29/2026 at 06:02 | Redaktion boerse-global.deJohan Wattenström has a message for shareholders, but the market is drowning it out with macro noise. The executive chairman and CEO of DeFi Technologies broke his public silence on July 27 with an open letter addressing a stock that has hemorrhaged roughly 84% of its value from its 52-week peak. His explanation was threefold: weak altcoin markets, a sector rotation away from crypto equities, and lingering technical effects from a prior capital raise.
The timing was hardly ideal. The shares had already shed about 23% in the preceding month alone, and the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority (FSA) had just rejected the company’s planned UCITS structure for crypto-linked assets — a setback Wattenström acknowledged directly. DeFi Technologies has filed an appeal and is now building the UCITS infrastructure elsewhere in the EU, he wrote.
But the broader market had other plans. On Tuesday, the stock slid another 3.25% to €0.3754, dragged down by a 2.8% dip in Bitcoin amid a broad risk-off mood ahead of the Federal Reserve’s two-day policy meeting — described by some analysts as the hardest to call in years. The slide came despite Wattenström’s assurances that the company is in far stronger shape than during the 2022-2023 crypto winter, citing record revenue and profit for 2025, roughly $150 million in cash on hand at the end of the first quarter, and a nearly debt-free balance sheet.
Washington Adds Another Layer
Compounding the macro headwinds, the U.S. Senate has shelved the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act to focus on Russia sanctions and personnel nominations. Majority Leader John Thune has confirmed the bill will not pass before the August recess. The implied probability of enactment by 2026 has collapsed from over 80% in the spring to roughly 37% as of last Friday. Realistically, a decision now looks unlikely until after the November midterms.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DeFi Technologies?
For DeFi Technologies, whose Valour subsidiary issues crypto-linked exchange-traded products, this is not background noise. Every regulatory delay in Washington translates almost mechanically into share price pressure, regardless of operational performance. The stock is effectively a leveraged bet on two narratives simultaneously — the Fed’s next move and the fate of the Clarity Act — layered on top of the usual crypto volatility.
Charting a Broken Trajectory
The technical picture underscores just how far the stock has strayed from its moorings. The 200-day moving average sits at €0.7399, nearly double the current price of €0.3866 — a gap that signals a complete detachment from long-term support. The 100-day average at €0.5369 is also well out of reach. The relative strength index of 41.2 (or 39.3 on Tuesday’s close) suggests oversold conditions without flashing a clear reversal signal.
The 52-week high of €2.52 (or €2.46 in the primary source) was set last July. The current 52-week low of €0.3408 was touched just four trading days ago, on July 24. For the calendar year 2026, the stock is down 42%.
A Toolkit of Defenses
Wattenström’s letter laid out a multi-pronged response. Cost-cutting is underway. The Valour custody platform is being expanded, and the Stillman Digital unit is targeting growth. The company is actively hunting for larger acquisition targets. Artificial intelligence is being woven deeper into trading algorithms and daily operations, with AI-powered investment products in the pipeline. DeFi Technologies also plans to launch its first hedge fund “very soon” and scale up arbitrage strategies in the second half of the year.
As a backstop if the selling persists, management has floated the possibility of a reverse stock split to maintain its Nasdaq listing. The company points to continued net inflows into Valour ETPs since the start of the year as evidence of underlying structural demand.

Analyst Caution
Despite the CEO’s confidence, the analyst community remains divided. One recent rating is a “Buy” with a C$1.00 price target. TipRanks’ AI analyst Spark, however, rates the stock neutral, citing weak cash generation and declining revenue on a trailing twelve-month basis despite strong reported profitability.
On a seven-day view, the stock has managed a roughly 3% gain — a sign that bargain hunters have not entirely vanished. But with the 52-week high still an 84% gap away and regulatory clarity in both Sweden and Washington uncertain, the question hanging over DeFi Technologies is whether the current bounce is the start of a recovery or just a pause before the next leg lower. Investors will be watching three milestones: the UCITS appeal outcome, the hedge fund launch, and the first tangible progress on acquisitions.
