Deutsche Telekom's Dual Strategy: Accelerating Fiber and Share Buybacks
31.03.2026 - 06:42:50 | boerse-global.de
Deutsche Telekom is executing a two-pronged strategy with notable momentum. The telecommunications giant is simultaneously accelerating the rollout of its fiber-optic network and progressing steadily with a multi-billion euro share repurchase initiative. Key developments in both areas are converging as the first quarter of 2026 draws to a close.
Share Repurchase Program Nears Completion of Initial Phase
On the capital allocation front, Deutsche Telekom continues to buy back its own shares aggressively. In just the four-day period from March 23 to 26, the company acquired 954,203 shares. This activity is part of a broader 2026 program authorized for up to 2 billion euros. The first tranche of this buyback, which covers up to 19.8 million shares, was already 14.64 million shares complete as of March 20. The cash outlay for those repurchases amounts to approximately 550 million euros.
The equity has responded positively to the company's actions. Trading significantly above its 200-day moving average, the share price currently stands about 22% above its 52-week low, which was recorded in November 2025.

Fiber Network Expansion Hits Record Pace
The infrastructure build-out is matching the financial engineering in intensity. Defying winter conditions, Deutsche Telekom activated approximately 120,000 new fiber-optic connections in January 2026 alone, setting a new monthly record. This rapid pace is reflected in recently announced regional projects.
From the fourth quarter of 2026, some 2,600 households in Teltow are slated to gain access to speeds of up to 1 Gigabit per second. Furthermore, since March 27, an additional 1,330 households in Bernburg Saale have been able to register for a future connection. The company is also bolstering its mobile network, with a new cell tower in Hattersheim am Main scheduled for activation before the end of 2026.
The group's annual report shows substantial progress, with 12.6 million German households passed by fiber at the end of 2025—an increase of 2.5 million year-over-year. Deutsche Telekom's ambitious target is to reach at least 25 million households by 2030.
Investors will receive a comprehensive update on both strategic fronts on May 13, 2026, when the company releases its first-quarter 2026 results. This report will provide crucial data on whether the record-breaking speed of fiber deployment has been sustained and offer further financial details.
