The timing could hardly be worse. Just as the Deutsche Telekom board prepared to present first-quarter earnings on Wednesday, tens of thousands of German employees walked off the job — the biggest coordinated walkout in years. Warnstreiks swept across 15 federal states on Monday and Tuesday, hitting customer service centres and infrastructure units, as the Ver.di union pushed for a 6.6 percent pay rise for roughly 60,000 tariff?affiliated staff over a 12?month term.

At the close on Tuesday, the stock had slipped to €27.61, leaving it 5.15 percent lower over the past 30 sessions and well below its 50?day moving average of €30.48. The market, it seems, has already begun pricing in the cost of a potential wage settlement.

Yet the numbers the company delivered the next morning told a different story. Organic revenue climbed 4.7 percent to €29.9 billion, while adjusted EBITDA AL rose 7.5 percent to €11.5 billion. Management responded by nudging full?year guidance upward: the adjusted EBITDA AL target now stands at roughly €47.5 billion, compared with the previous €47.4 billion. “Our business is running steadily, largely unaffected by events around the globe,” chief executive Tim Höttges said.

That resilience is underpinned by a steady stream of shareholder-friendly moves. The €1.00 per share dividend confirmed at the April annual meeting marks an 11 percent increase year?on?year — and comes with a bonus for German retail investors, as it is paid out without withholding tax. Meanwhile, the group has signalled it will repurchase $2 billion of its own shares in 2026. The recent upgrade to A? by S&P Global Ratings adds further credence to the improved financial profile, while analysts point to adjusted earnings per share of around €2.20 in 2026 and €2.50 in 2027, leaving plenty of headroom for further payout increases.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Labour costs, however, threaten to eat into those margins. Ver.di is also demanding an annual membership bonus of €660 and higher training allowances of an extra €120 a month. Negotiator Frank Sauerland noted that no employer offer has yet been tabled. With roughly 70,000 staff in Germany and about 75 million mobile customers, any above?norm tariff settlement would be felt directly on the domestic cost base — at a time when billions are being poured into fibre and 5G infrastructure.

The counterweight remains T?Mobile US. The American subsidiary, which is the group’s primary growth engine, has just kicked off commercial tests of an AI?powered 5G?Advanced network alongside Ericsson. First field trials showed a 10 percent improvement in spectral efficiency and up to a 15 percent boost in download throughput. For a capital?intensive operator, such advances promise to unlock capacity without immediately laying out fresh hardware — a key differentiator in a consolidating US market.

Analysts have largely held their ground. The median 12?month price target from 17 experts sits at €38.12, implying considerable upside from current levels. The dividend yield, factoring in the €1.00 payout, comes to roughly 3.64 percent. The gap between the share price and the consensus estimate reflects how the stock is caught between the defensive appeal of recurring cash flows and the near?term pressure of domestic turmoil.

Deutsche Telekom at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Much now hinges on how the tariff negotiations evolve. If a settlement stays within a range that can be absorbed by T?Mobile US’s growth and the group’s operational leverage, the dividend story remains intact. But with no employer offer yet on the table — and the union intent on capitalising on the strong Q1 performance — the coming weeks will determine whether the strike is merely a noisy sideshow or the beginning of a genuine cost escalation.
