DroneShield has released a significant software update for its counter-drone platforms, introducing an offline mode that allows soldiers to update systems via removable media without an internet connection. The feature targets a critical vulnerability in isolated military outposts and improves target-tracking speed by 58% over the previous version. Yet the market remains singularly focused on a regulatory cloud that has been hanging over the stock for months.

Shares closed at €1.42 on Wednesday, shedding 4.77% from the prior day's €1.49 finish. The decline extends a painful run: the stock is down 19.26% over the past 30 days and has lost 28.41% since the start of the year. At current levels, DroneShield sits 21.65% below its 50-day moving average of €1.81 and 29.36% below the 200-day average of €2.01. The 14-day relative strength index stands at 37.0, edging toward oversold territory. From the 52-week high of €3.65 reached in October 2025, the shares have fallen 61.07%.

The operational story points in the opposite direction. DroneShield holds a record order backlog of 730 million Australian dollars and recently secured a A$24.9 million contract from the U.S. Joint Interagency Task Force 401 for mobile and stationary counter-drone systems, providing reliable revenue over the next two years. Management estimates the sales pipeline at A$2.3 billion and has already locked in A$171 million in firm revenue for the full year 2026. The balance sheet carries A$222.8 million in cash and no debt. In July, retired Rear Admiral Lee Goddard joined the board to strengthen the company's engagement with complex government procurement programs.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DroneShield?

All of that positive news has been overshadowed by an investigation by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission. ASIC launched a probe in November 2025 into DroneShield's market disclosures and trading activities, and the scrutiny has intensified since May 2026. The resulting governance discount has weighed heavily on sentiment, amplified by a broader sell-off in defence stocks. Rival Electro Optic Systems also posted losses on Wednesday, and recent U.S.-Iran airstrikes that pushed oil prices higher have driven investors out of riskier assets.

The company's pivot from a pure hardware supplier to a software-centric model is central to its long-term strategy. Subscription revenue from the new SaaS offerings reached A$5 million in the first quarter of 2026, representing roughly 7% of total sales. The updated software is designed to counter FPV drones and coordinated swarm attacks — threats that are reshaping modern battlefield requirements. Analyst opinions remain sharply divided: some maintain "Strong Buy" ratings with price targets as high as A$4.80, while others recommend selling, citing high valuation and the regulatory overhang. The consensus target of A$3.41 Australian dollars still implies a roughly 49% upside from current levels.

DroneShield is scheduled to report half-year results at the end of August. Management will need to demonstrate steady growth in recurring software revenue to convince investors that the operational turnaround can survive the regulatory headwinds. Until the ASIC investigation reaches a conclusion, the trust gap between the company's technological progress and its market valuation shows no sign of closing.
