Short sellers are tightening their grip on DroneShield even as the counter-drone specialist’s stock shows technical signs of being oversold. The short interest in the Australian-listed security has climbed to 12.8% of free float, up from 11.9% just a week ago — a fresh record for the company and one of the highest short ratios on the Australian bourse alongside names like Lotus Resources and Domino’s Pizza Enterprises. Yet on the same day the new figure was disclosed, the shares actually rose 3.5% in Sydney to A$2.215, underlining just how split the market has become on the company’s prospects.

The bearish positioning has been building for weeks, and the price has already suffered heavy damage before the latest short spike. DroneShield is now trading 64% below its 52-week high of A$3.65 set in October 2025. Over the past month the stock has shed 20.7%, and on a year-to-date basis the loss stands at 26.7%. The 14-day relative strength index sits at 34.1, edging into oversold territory, while 30-day annualized volatility has hit 69% — a clear sign of frayed investor nerves.

At the heart of the short thesis is a lingering regulatory overhang. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has been scrutinising DroneShield’s market disclosures and insider share sales dating back to late 2025. The probe initially came to light earlier this year, and ASIC’s formal investigation has been running since May 2026. At issue are a withdrawn contract announcement and trades by former executives. DroneShield has pledged full cooperation, but until the review concludes, short sellers see little reason to cover.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DroneShield?

The uncertainty was compounded this month when Jefferies cut its price target for DroneShield to A$2.05 from A$2.80 — the second downgrade in seven weeks. The investment bank slashed its revenue estimates for 2026 through 2028 by 9% and trimmed profit forecasts by 5% to 16%. The move highlights a sharp reassessment of the company’s near-term growth trajectory. Analyst opinions, however, are deeply divided. Bell Potter maintains a Buy rating with a price target of A$4.80, more than double the current level, while Ord Minnett rates the stock a Sell with a target of A$2.28. The wide gulf reflects the market’s inability to price in a clear outcome for either the business or the regulatory process.

Operationally, DroneShield continues to roll out product upgrades and bag new contracts. A software update for its DroneSentry-C2 platform is slated for the third quarter of 2026, and a new independent board member is set to join. Such developments have not been enough to shift the narrative, but the upcoming half-year results due at the end of August could prove decisive. They will provide a hard data point against which the competing bullish and bearish views can be measured — and may determine whether the short sellers are proven right or forced to scramble for cover.
