In a significant strategic move, the Australian defense technology firm DroneShield has launched a dedicated production line for counter-drone systems within the European Union. This initiative is a core component of a broader manufacturing expansion designed to quintuple the company's production capacity to approximately AUD 2.4 billion by the end of 2026. The timing aligns with a period of rapidly escalating defense budgets across Europe, where establishing a local manufacturing footprint is becoming an increasingly critical requirement for securing government contracts.

Record Financials Fuel Expansion Ambitions

The push into EU-based manufacturing follows a landmark fiscal year for the company. For FY 2025, DroneShield reported its first-ever net profit of AUD 3.5 million. This profitability was achieved on revenue of AUD 216.5 million, representing a staggering 276% increase year-over-year. The company's gross margin stood at 64.8%, slightly below the expectations of analysts at Bell Potter. Consequently, the firm adjusted its price target from AUD 5.00 to AUD 4.80, while maintaining its buy recommendation on the stock.

DroneShield's secured order book for 2026 currently totals AUD 104 million. A major component of this backlog is a European military contract valued at AUD 49.6 million for portable drone defense systems, marking the second-largest single order in the company's history. Furthermore, the total project pipeline has swelled to AUD 2.3 billion, having grown by that amount within a single month. This pipeline includes 78 European opportunities alone, with a combined value of AUD 1.2 billion.

Operational Ramp-Up and Leadership

The new European production facility is being established in partnership with an established contract manufacturer. This partner will manage the full assembly process, encompassing everything from printed circuit board population and precision machining to cable harnessing and final quality assurance. Initial deliveries from this line are scheduled to commence in mid-2026.

To support this global scaling, DroneShield is significantly expanding its workforce, planning to grow from 250 to over 450 employees. This growth accompanies the development of additional manufacturing sites in Australia and the United States. On the leadership front, the company has appointed Michael Powell as Chief Operating Officer, leveraging his more than 25 years of experience in the defense and aerospace sectors.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DroneShield?

In a related corporate action, DroneShield has applied to the ASX for the quotation of 280,000 new shares, which were issued on March 13, 2026.

With an active EU production line now in development, a record project pipeline, and its inaugural profitable year achieved, the company's focus is squarely on execution. Market observers will be closely watching the firm's ability to meet its ambitious delivery timelines throughout the coming year.
