EU’s 2027 Machine Safety Rule Triggers Rush for AI-Powered Voice and Language Tools

A regulatory deadline more than two years away is already reshaping how European manufacturers train and protect their workers. The EU’s Machine Regulation (EU 2023/1230) becomes mandatory on 20 January 2027, requiring companies to prove that safety instructions are not only delivered but clearly understood — regardless of the employee’s native language or the physical environment.
That pressure helps explain a flurry of announcements this month from technology providers. On 17 June, translation specialist DeepL announced it had acquired the team and technology of Mixhalo, a company founded in 2016 that specializes in ultra-low-latency audio transmission. The deal gives DeepL access to real-time audio that can carry safety briefings without perceptible delay — a critical feature in noisy factory floors or emergency drills.
DeepL plans to integrate Mixhalo’s technology into DeepL Voice, its speech-translation product. In a recent Slator study, DeepL Voice scored 96.4 out of 100 on quality, with an error rate of roughly four percent against a market average of 17 percent. The company has also opened a new office in Silicon Valley. Its existing user base includes NVIDIA, Cisco and roughly half of the Fortune 500.
On the same day, building-management specialist Microshare rolled out a language expansion for its EverSmart™ suite of AI assistants. The update adds 31 new languages, aimed at international customers in Europe and Asia. Microshare cited Zurich Airport and Adam’s Pest Control in the United States as reference clients, pointing to the need for safety and hygiene instructions that reach a multilingual workforce.

The regulatory environment is also forcing hardware upgrades. In mid-June, automation safety firm Pilz received a TĂśV SĂśD certificate for its configurable safety controller PNOZmulti 2, confirming compliance with the upcoming Machine Regulation. Meanwhile, the NIS2 Directive pushes companies to adopt risk-based security management for operational technology (OT). Experts warn that the growing convergence of IT and OT creates new vulnerabilities, which can be addressed through network segmentation and asset management.
Physical safety is getting an AI-driven upgrade as well. On 18 June, network infrastructure provider Belden announced a partnership with Accenture that uses NVIDIA technology to detect when a person enters a danger zone and instantly stop industrial robots. A pilot project is scheduled to launch at an unnamed automotive manufacturer at the end of September 2026.
These developments will be showcased at regional events in the coming days. On 19 June, Karlsruhe hosts the Bunte Nacht der Digitalisierung, where the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and EML Speech Technology will present trends in human-machine interaction. Later this month, DeepL plans a live demo of its new capabilities at the GITEX Europe trade fair.
