Fake Tenders and Phishing Lures: Why Construction Sites Are Becoming Cyber Battlefields

A targeted phishing campaign that spoofed one of Europe’s largest building firms, PORR, sent shockwaves through the construction industry in June. Fake tender documents tricked subcontractors and suppliers into entering their Microsoft 365 credentials on fraudulent pages. Security experts now point to DNS filtering as the most effective immediate defence.
The attack underscores a paradox racing through the sector: the same digital tools that make building sites safer also open them to exploitation. Cloud monitoring, IoT-connected fire alarms and AI-driven cameras are being deployed faster than many companies can lock down their networks.
As construction firms adopt more connected safety devices, they must also ensure their fire safety procedures keep pace. Many UK companies underestimate how quickly outdated fire risk assessments can lead to serious enforcement action. The free Fire Safety Toolkit includes a full risk assessment template, evacuation plan, and training records — everything needed to meet current UK fire safety regulations. Siemens launched its Sinteso Nova detector portfolio in mid-June, marketing it as a move from reactive alarm systems to a data-driven safety platform. The devices rely on IoT connectivity for remote monitoring and predictive maintenance, with plug-and-play retrofitting for existing infrastructure. Days later, Axis Communications unveiled the dual-spectrum AXIS Q2802-E surveillance camera, combining thermal imaging with 4K optical sensors. Its on-device AI analyses imagery locally, while features like Edge Vault guard against cyber intrusion. The unit withstands winds up to 216 km/h, according to the manufacturer.
Large industrial firms are responding by building private clouds. Volkswagen commissioned T?Systems in mid-June to construct a Group Private Cloud, aiming for greater independence and data processing control within Europe. Deutsche Telekom simultaneously launched “Sovereign Cortex”, a managed cyber defence service developed with Palo Alto Networks that complies with DORA, NIS-2 and the GDPR. Telekom retains management of the encryption keys.
IoT hardware suppliers are also racing the calendar. IoTmaxx is already configuring its gateways for the EU Cyber Resilience Act, which becomes mandatory in December 2027. The devices use encrypted communication and certificate-based authentication.
Precision location technologies are gaining ground in hazardous zones. Litum presented an ATEX-certified product family in mid-June that achieves sub-metre accuracy using Ultra-Wideband (UWB) and Bluetooth Low Energy, approved for explosive atmospheres. A parallel research project, NIKE MATE — involving TU Graz and the Austrian Ministry of Defence — is developing a UWB network for GPS-denied environments. Autonomous robots generate 3D maps while AI maintains exact positioning.
Working in hazardous environments demands rigorous safety documentation beyond the latest tech. Many UK firms are missing critical paperwork — from risk assessments to PPE policies — that can trigger heavy fines during inspections. The Health & Safety Toolkit provides ready-to-use templates covering COSHH, PUWER, and fire safety, trusted by over 37,000 UK businesses. Download the free Health & Safety Toolkit
Heavy machinery continues to evolve. The Australian firm Everwilling Group acquired the first Liebherr LTM 1400?6.1 mobile crane in mid-June. With a lifting capacity of 450 tonnes and a 70?metre telescopic boom, it targets large-scale infrastructure work.
At the Eurosatory trade fair, KNDS and Hensoldt unveiled the ODAEON protection system for armoured vehicles. It detects hostile optics and drones in real time, adding a physical layer to the digital security challenge that now defines modern construction and industry.
