Fatal fall at Hong Kong airport prompts safety investigation

A 62-year-old maintenance worker has died after falling from height at a Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company (HAECO) facility at Hong Kong International Airport, prompting an investigation by the Labour Department.
The incident, which occurred on the morning of July 27, 2026, at the Chek Lap Kok site, highlights the ongoing risks faced by workers in industrial maintenance roles — a concern that resonates with UK employers operating in similar environments.
Worker fell six metres during aircraft repairs
The worker, identified by the surname Sin, was performing repairs on the exterior of an aircraft when the accident happened. Police received an alert at approximately 8:35 am.
According to reports from the scene, Sin was stationed on a mobile platform roughly six metres high while servicing the aircraft fuselage indoors. Preliminary findings suggest he may have lost his footing or fallen into a gap between two work platforms.
The man was found unconscious with significant head injuries and was rushed to North Lantau Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:07 am.
Investigations underway
The Labour Department has launched an inquiry to determine whether safety protocols were followed at the HAECO facility. The company confirmed the fatality and stated it is cooperating fully with the investigation, as well as providing support to the worker's family.
The Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims (ARIAV) is also assisting the family. Representatives from the organisation stressed the importance of adhering to strict safety measures when working at height.
