Fire Engulfs Wolverhampton Recycling Yard, Forcing School Closure and Road Closures

A major fire at a recycling facility in Wolverhampton has caused significant disruption to local transport and forced a nearby school to close, after 1,000 tonnes of material caught alight in the early hours of July 6. The West Midlands Fire Service was called to the Jones Skips waste transfer station on Cross Street, in the Horseley Fields area, at approximately 4:25 am. Eight fire crews — including an aerial platform and a high-volume pumping unit — were dispatched to tackle the blaze, which had spread to a shed and on-site machinery as well as the large volume of compacted waste.

By 7:30 am, crews reported progress in containing the fire, using a mechanical grabber and two aerial platforms to reach deep-seated pockets within the waste piles. Facility staff arrived later in the morning to assist with moving debris. However, fire officials described the operation as challenging due to access difficulties and the nature of the deep-seated material, with resources expected to remain at the site into the evening.

Widespread Transport Disruptions

Several major roads were closed to accommodate emergency vehicles and pumping equipment, including:
- Willenhall Road
- Lower Horseley Fields
- Lower Walsall Street
- Hickman Avenue
- Commercial Road

Cause Under Investigation

While explosions were heard during the early stages of the incident, the fire service has not yet determined the formal cause of the blaze. A significant exclusion zone remained in place throughout the day as crews continued to manage the smouldering waste.
