The Japanese corporate bitcoin hoarder Metaplanet is caught in a pincer movement. Its stock has shed nearly 89% over the past year, touching €1.09 — barely three cents above a new 52-week low — as two distinct pressures collide. A forced exit from a key index has triggered mandatory selling by passive funds, while the company's own ambitions to buy 210,000 bitcoins by 2027 are raising the spectre of severe shareholder dilution.

The immediate catalyst for the latest leg lower came on 22 June, when S&P Dow Jones Indices removed Metaplanet from the S&P Japan Mid Cap 100. Index-tracking funds must now liquidate their holdings, and the resulting wave of selling has driven the stock down 17% in the past seven days alone. That technical overhang has compounded a year-to-date decline of roughly 51%, wiping out more than half the company's market value since January.

Yet Metaplanet’s core thesis — accumulating the world’s largest public-company bitcoin stash in Asia — has never been more aggressive. The company currently holds 40,177 coins and has set a target of exactly 210,000 by the end of 2027, a figure that would represent 1% of all bitcoins that will ever exist. Achieving that means sourcing an additional 170,000 coins, a procurement challenge that dwarfs anything the company has attempted so far.

The funding dilemma is where the stock’s real vulnerability lies. Earlier this year, Metaplanet relied heavily on new share issuance to buy bitcoin, a tactic that diluted existing holders repeatedly. Management has now acknowledged that pure equity raises are suboptimal, and in recent quarterly commentary flagged a pivot toward a broader mix of secured loans and preferred shares. The key internal metric is bitcoin per share — only if that figure rises do ordinary shareholders truly benefit from the strategy.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Metaplanet?

The market, however, is pricing in deep skepticism. Metaplanet’s entire enterprise value is currently trading at roughly 0.8 times the value of its bitcoin pile alone, implying investors assign negative value to the operating business. That discount reflects both the dilution anxiety and the structural forced selling from the index removal.

To keep retail holders engaged, the company has launched a loyalty lottery: anyone who holds at least 100 shares by the end of June can win bitcoin prizes via the Coincheck exchange, with 1,550 winners selected. On a more strategic front, CEO Simon Gerovich is pushing ahead with "Project Nova," which aims to transform Metaplanet into a regulated financial services firm. The acquisition of Siiibo Securities is slated for July 2026 and would provide the infrastructure to issue its own crypto-linked financial products.

Technically, the stock is deeply oversold. The relative strength index sits at 27.7, well into territory that often precedes a bounce, while the share price has fallen more than 53% below its 200-day moving average. Annualized volatility is a staggering 62%, reflecting extreme investor nervousness.

Metaplanet at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

For the plan to work, three conditions must align. Metaplanet needs to accelerate its bitcoin buying without further diluting shareholders — a delicate balancing act. The general price of bitcoin will heavily influence the health of its balance sheet. And if the shift to loans and preferred shares fails to fill the funding gap, the company may be forced back to the equity market, deepening the downward spiral. The Siiibo acquisition in July could be the near-term catalyst that changes the narrative, but until then, the stock remains trapped between index-related selling and the inherent tension of a treasury strategy that relies on more than just the price of the underlying asset.
