German Safety Shift: Digital Platforms and New Laws Reshape Workplace Prevention

Germany’s tightening regulatory landscape is pushing occupational safety beyond paperwork and into the digital age. With the KRITIS-Dachgesetz now 100 days old, experts say employers must adopt holistic security strategies that blend physical and cyber protection. On Wednesday, at the Sicherheits-Expo in Munich, safety specialist Bastian Rauen called for integrated approaches to build resilience against both analogue and digital threats.
That call is being answered by a wave of new software platforms launched in recent days. Each aims to automate the documentation and risk-assessment tasks that regulators are making more demanding. The result is a fragmented but fast-growing market for digital prevention tools.
For UK companies facing similar compliance demands, a free Risk Assessment Toolkit provides 41 ready-to-use templates and checklists for workplace risk management. From fire safety to lone working, these professionally designed documents help you meet your obligations efficiently. Download the free Risk Assessment Toolkit
Phoenix Corporate Health GmbH debuted a browser-based system on Monday that centralises documentation, training management and deadline monitoring. The ZF BKK, a company health insurance fund, has already validated the platform’s effectiveness. For employers, the main selling point is greater legal certainty in meeting evolving obligations.
Visitech has meanwhile upgraded its fabricaONE.AI platform with a module for automatic workplace evaluation, known as SOUT. The tool helps companies identify hazards faster and implement protective measures, creating a uniform digital framework for risk management. A third player, TransGate GmbH, has digitised the STOPV principle – a hierarchy that prioritises substitution, technology, organisation, personnel and behaviour. Its Prevenio software now maps that structure directly.
The push is not only about software. The Berufsgenossenschaft Holz und Metall (BGHM) is running a compulsory basic seminar in Saarbrücken on Wednesday, designed to ensure accident-prevention rules are actually applied on the shop floor. And a pilot project by HP using OpenAI’s Frontier platform shows what automation can achieve: in 43 projects it saved roughly 82 hours of safety work per week, closing vulnerabilities far faster than conventional methods.
Hardware is also evolving. MSA now equips the faceplate of its M1 compressed-air respirator with a carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic from BASF (Ultramid PA66 ESD). The material is impact-resistant and safe for explosion-prone areas, while the integrated emergency grip withstands loads of up to 200 kilograms.
With fire risks rising due to hotter summers and ageing infrastructure, having a robust fire safety plan is essential. A comprehensive Fire Safety Toolkit includes risk assessment templates, evacuation plans, and fire extinguisher training materials to help UK employers stay compliant. Sustainability ratings are becoming a factor in supplier selection. Tool specialist HAHN+KOLB earned a Platinum rating from EcoVadis, placing it among the top one percent of assessed firms. The score considered not only environmental criteria but also certifications such as ISO 45001 for occupational safety.
Looking ahead, experts warn that the summer 2026 heatwave will heighten fire risks in IT infrastructure. They recommend stronger early-detection systems, automatic extinguishing devices, and structural measures including compliance with fire-resistance class EI90.
