Heart Scans Replace Morning Coffee as German Firms Rethink Workplace Health

In a growing trend, German employers are merging high-tech medical diagnostics with large-scale sporting events to monitor and improve workforce well-being. A recent health day at a major automotive supplier, held in cooperation with the AOK Ludwigsburg-Rems-Murr, put cardiac screening at center stage.
Cardioscans — heart and stress tests that measure heart rate variability, individual stress levels, and regeneration capacity — were offered to employees. The goal: catch early signs of overexertion and encourage workers to take more responsibility for their own health.
For UK employers, running workplace health initiatives is only half the story — keeping compliant records is just as important. A comprehensive Health & Safety Toolkit provides ready-to-use risk assessments, checklists, and templates that help you meet legal duties under the Health & Safety at Work Act, COSHH, PUWER and more. Over 37,000 British companies already rely on it. Download the free Health & Safety Toolkit
That event on June 18 is just one piece of a broader push. Across the country, corporate running events are drawing record participation, and companies are layering them with medical check-ups to strengthen both physical and mental resilience.
Running Events See Record Numbers
The 22nd AOK Firmenlauf in Lüdenscheid, scheduled for July 3, 2026, had already registered 7,122 participants from 354 companies by mid-June. The largest teams include Otto Fuchs with 238 runners, Busch-Jaeger with 203, and the city administration of Lüdenscheid with 200.
Two weeks earlier, on June 18, the Bonn corporate run saw participants complete a 5.7-kilometer course around the Rheinauensee. Organizers set up extra water stations and lawn sprinklers to combat the high temperatures. That same day, the LKZ-Firmenlauf in Ludwigsburg featured RKH Gesundheit as the biggest team, with roughly 160 people.
Further events are already on the calendar. In Neumarkt, the Fischer Automobile Firmenlauf kicks off July 16 with 102 companies signed up. Paderborn expects up to 6,000 visitors for its Day of Sports on June 21 in the Schlosspark, where more than 90 clubs will offer hands-on activities.
Summer Programs and Niche Health Days
Beyond one-off runs, longer-term initiatives are expanding. In Nagold, the ninth edition of "Bewegt im Kleb" starts July 1 and runs until mid-September. It offers an expanded course program including yoga and dance at the newly renovated Boysen Forum. Last year, roughly 2,700 participants used the 208 courses on offer.
As German workplaces invest in proactive health events, UK employers face a different challenge — ensuring their health and safety documentation meets the legal requirements of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974. A free toolkit provides nine practical tools, including risk assessments, compliance checklists, and a director liability guide to minimise personal risk. Specialized health days are also proliferating:
- Leverkusen: The fourth Leverkusen Health Day takes place June 27, focusing on intestinal health and inclusion.
- Bad Salzuflen: A Kneipp health day is planned for July 19. Dr. Lutz Ehnert, vice president of the Kneipp Association, will give talks on the preventive benefits of water treatments.
- Rheine: TV Jahn addresses older demographics with a "Health Day 60 Plus" on November 15, featuring workshops on balance and fitness.
Industrial Sector Shows Caution
While most companies keep their health-program budgets stable, isolated signs of restraint appear in the industrial sector. On June 17, Schoeller Werk announced it would pause plans to build a new competence center in Kall, citing a difficult investment environment. The company stressed that ongoing operations for its roughly 770 employees and the expected annual turnover of about 220 million euros remain unaffected.
