Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, the historic printing press manufacturer, has formally cemented its strategic shift into the defense sector. The company established a joint venture this week, combining its industrial manufacturing expertise with American-Israeli security technology to target a multi-billion euro market.

Joint Venture Targets Automated Defense Systems

In partnership with US-based Ondas Inc., Heidelberger Druck officially launched ONBERG Autonomous Systems on Wednesday. The venture’s core objective is the production and sale of highly automated, AI-powered counter-drone systems. The existing facility in Brandenburg an der Havel will serve as the central manufacturing hub, where the patented "Iron Drone" systems will be built. Initial deployments are planned to protect critical infrastructure within Germany and Ukraine.

Financial Backing for a New Direction

The market need for such protective measures is substantial. Analysts estimate that comprehensively securing Germany’s approximately 2,000 critical infrastructure sites could require investments of up to 80 billion euros. To fund the development of sales, R&D, and industrial production capacities for this new endeavor, Heidelberg has proactively refinanced its debt. The company replaced its syndicated credit line with a new consortium loan, increasing the total volume to 436 million euros. This financial restructuring provides the firm with operational flexibility through 2030.

Share Price and Future Implications

This radical transformation of the company’s business model is being closely watched by investors. Following a weak start to the year that saw shares decline 31.53 percent since January, the stock closed at 1.39 euros on Thursday. The new defense strategy offers a fundamental reorientation for the beleaguered share price. The first concrete financial results from the joint venture will be visible when the group presents its next annual report on June 10, 2026.
