Junior explorer Highland Critical Minerals heads into its summer exploration campaign with an unusual split narrative: a stock that has moved higher for reasons its own management cannot explain, and a field season that must set the stage for a formal resource estimate by the end of 2026.

The company’s share price and trading volume recently caught the attention of the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO). On 8 May 2026, Highland issued a statement confirming that CIRO had asked for an explanation. Management responded that it was unaware of any operational development that could justify the spike in market activity. Such a request is standard when a stock moves sharply without a corresponding corporate announcement, but the admission that the company itself has no clue what is driving the buying is rare for a listed junior.

While that mystery plays out in the market, the actual work begins. Highland expects to launch its summer exploration programme late this month on the Church Property in northwestern Ontario. The 5,526-hectare land package is considered prospective for lithium and other critical minerals. Plans include airborne geophysical surveys — radiometrics and LiDAR — along with conventional soil sampling. The goal is a high-resolution map of the subsurface that can sharpen future drill targets.

The Church Property is the company’s flagship, but it is not the only project. Highland also owns the Sy Property in Nunavut’s Yathkyed Lake greenstone belt, a gold-focused asset covering roughly 3,345 hectares. Systematic modern field work has been absent there for several years, so this season will test whether historic data holds up under current scrutiny. Preparations for a new phase of evaluation began in late 2025, and the company announced in early May 2026 that a summer programme was on the cards.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Highland Critical Minerals?

Financing for the coming work is in place, albeit on a tight scale. A non-brokered flow-through private placement closed in April 2026, bringing in C$400,000 that CEO Ted Yew said would be directed specifically into qualifying exploration expenditures on the Church Property. That follows warrant exercises in late 2025 that raised roughly C$736,000 gross, lifting the cash balance to about C$875,000 at the time.

Earlier, in December 2025, Highland completed a structural spin-out of its gold assets in the Red Lake district. More than 15 million shares of the newly listed Highland Red Lake Gold Corp. were distributed to existing shareholders on 8 December. That move streamlined Highland’s portfolio, leaving the company focused on critical minerals and its remaining gold exposure in Nunavut.

On the financial front, the numbers reflect an early-stage explorer. The market capitalisation stands at roughly US$7.1 million, with 25.7 million shares outstanding. The trailing twelve-month loss per share is US$0.02. For a junior of this size, liquidity is tight, and the unexplained stock rally — however welcome to holders — adds an element of uncertainty that the company can neither confirm nor dispel.

Highland Critical Minerals at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The ultimate prize remains a NI-43-101 compliant resource estimate at the Church Property. Management has set a target of completing that by the end of 2026. If successful, Highland could become an acquisition candidate for mid-tier producers looking to secure strategic lithium and critical mineral assets. But until then, every step hinges on what the rocks reveal this summer — and on whether the market’s unexplained enthusiasm proves to have any connection to the fundamentals on the ground.
