The Canadian Securities Exchange has seen its share of junior explorer volatility, but Highland Critical Minerals has been an extreme case. The stock has swung by an average of 29% each week over the past three months, and the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (CIRO) has twice in recent weeks demanded explanations for unusual trading activity. Management responded both times that no material change in operations had occurred. Against that fraught backdrop, the company is now moving into the field with its most ambitious exploration season yet.

The centerpiece of the summer campaign is a radiometric and LiDAR airborne geophysical survey over the Church Property in northwestern Ontario, scheduled to begin in late May 2026. The decision to go airborne marks a strategic departure from last year’s disappointing soil program, which used Mobile Metal Ion technology and failed to identify any significant lithium anomalies. The method hit its limits because much of the terrain lacks exposed bedrock. The new approach aims to produce high-resolution subsurface imagery and define concrete drill targets before more expensive ground work begins.

The Church Property consists of 261 claims covering roughly 5,526 hectares, about 16 kilometers west of Nipigon and 89 kilometers northeast of Thunder Bay. The geology features Archean metasediments, granite bodies, and pegmatites — a setting considered favorable for lithium-cesium-tantalum mineralization. Funding for the campaign comes from a non-brokered flow-through private placement that grossed 400,000 Canadian dollars, with 1.6 million shares issued at 0.25 CAD each. The expenditures qualify as Canadian Exploration Expenses under the Income Tax Act, giving investors a tax deduction.

Highland has also streamlined its portfolio. Through an arrangement plan, it reduced its stake in Highland Red Lake Gold from roughly 73% to 17%. Shareholders received 0.5 shares and 0.5 warrants of the spun-out entity for each Highland share held. The remaining portfolio now focuses on two assets: the Church lithium property in Ontario and the Sy gold project in Nunavut. The Sy project spans nearly 46,000 hectares and has documented more than 40 high-grade gold occurrences along a 30-kilometer trend, with surface samples grading up to 38.8 grams of gold per tonne. The geology has been compared to established Nunavut gold camps such as Meadowbank and Meliadine.

The Sy project may benefit from a separate development far from the drill bit. On May 20, 2026, the Canadian government announced more than 55 million CAD in funding for Arctic infrastructure and critical-mineral supply chains, with up to 50 million CAD earmarked for planning and preliminary work on the Grays Bay road and port project. That infrastructure, if realized, could lower the cost of future exploration logistics in the region where Highland operates. While no immediate project progress follows, the strategic positioning improves.

Highland reported a net loss of roughly 559,000 CAD for fiscal 2025 and expects a compliant NI 43-101 resource estimate by the end of 2026. The stock recently traded at 0.22 CAD, well below its 200-day moving average, though it closed at 0.30 CAD on May 27. For a company that has weathered two regulatory inquiries and a method change forced by blank soil results, the airborne survey represents the first concrete data point since its restructuring — and a pivotal test of whether its new technical path can deliver targets worthy of drilling.
