A major study of 91,000 people finds each extra hour of sitting raises cancer death risk by 9%, while five minutes of intense movement cuts it by 22%. Simple antidote for remote workers.

The shift to hybrid and remote work has created a hidden health hazard: employees spending ever longer hours in their chairs. A major international study now quantifies the danger – and offers a surprisingly simple remedy that takes barely any time out of the workday.

Researchers from the University of Glasgow and Harvard University analyzed data from more than 91,000 participants in the UK Biobank, tracking their health over more than twelve years. The findings, published in PLOS Medicine in early July, show that each extra hour of uninterrupted sitting raises the risk of dying from cancer by nine percent. Breaking up sitting time with any movement, however, cuts that same risk by 19 percent for every hour of interrupted sitting.

The study pinpoints the most effective movement strategies. Replacing one hour of sitting with light physical activity reduces the cancer mortality risk by twelve percent, while 30 minutes of moderate exercise brings an eight percent reduction. The standout finding: just five minutes of intense activity – the kind that leaves you slightly breathless – lowers the risk by 22 percent.

But tackling the risks of static work isn't only about movement. Employers also need to formally assess and document hazards like prolonged sitting to stay compliant and protect their teams. A free Risk Assessment Toolkit provides 41 ready-to-use templates and checklists covering everything from workstation setup to lone working, helping UK companies meet their legal duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act. Germany’s statutory accident insurer VBG has been examining working conditions in the private banking sector through its "Mitdenken 4.0" initiative. Its survey found that 70 percent of employees work mobile at least once a week. That shift has introduced new problems: isolation, longer hours, and – critically – poorly equipped home offices that lack ergonomic setups. In response, the social partners ver.di and the employer association AGV Banken are developing practical guides for healthier hybrid work models.

The hardware industry is meanwhile rolling out tools to make long screen hours more tolerable. ViewSonic launches the VG2719U-4K this month, a 27-inch monitor with 150 millimeters of height adjustment, a pivot function, and Eye ProTech technology to reduce eye strain. Its USB-C port delivers 96 watts of power, cutting cable clutter. Price: 309 euros.

Asus follows with two OLED models for imaging professionals: the ProArt PA27USD and PA32USD, both integrating colorimeters and supporting Thunderbolt 4. On the gaming front, AOC ships the AGON PRO AGP277QKDC in August with a 540-hertz refresh rate, while ASUS introduces the ROG Strix OLED XG34WCDMS ultrawide display. For projection, Xgimi releases its Mira ultra-short-throw projector from July 15, with a Pro version due in summer.

The message is clear: better hardware can ease physical strain, but the most powerful antidote to the risks of sedentary work remains regular, brief movement – and the evidence now shows that even a few minutes can make a life-or-death difference.
