Intuitive Surgical’s AI Roadshow Fails to Halt a Stock Plunge That Has Erased Nearly 40% This Year

Intuitive Surgical's AI roadmap for robotic surgery fails to lift shares, which hit a 52-week low amid J&J's FDA clearance for Ottava and strong Q2 earnings.

Intuitive Surgical laid out an ambitious five-tier artificial intelligence framework for robotic surgery at the Society of Robotic Surgery conference in Hollywood, Florida, on July 23 — and watched its shares tumble to a fresh 52-week low on the same day. The juxtaposition could hardly have been starker: a company showcasing a future of supervised autonomy and tele-surgery, while its stock price tells a story of deepening investor unease.

The da Vinci manufacturer’s AI model, built on data from more than 20 million procedures, spans five layers: clean data collection, clinical insights, intraoperative guidance, enhanced dexterity, and finally supervised autonomy. During the presentation, the company demonstrated a live telesurgery link between Sunnyvale, California, and Atlanta, Georgia. CEO Dave Rosa framed the initiative as a means to improve care, lower costs, and expand surgical access. Iman Jeddi, an SVP at Intuitive, stressed that supervised autonomy augments the surgeon’s capabilities rather than replacing them.

Yet the market’s reaction was dismissive. The stock closed at €290.25 on the day of the presentation, down 2.88%, after touching an intraday low of €289.05 — a new 52-week trough. The decline extended a brutal slide that has wiped out roughly 40% of the share price since the start of 2026. The 14-day relative strength index has fallen to 28.9, deep in oversold territory, suggesting the selling may have become exaggerated.

A Rival Finally Gets FDA Clearance

Compounding the pressure, Johnson & Johnson received FDA approval for its Ottava Robotic Surgical System on the same day. The clearance covers a broad range of soft-tissue procedures, including gastric bypass, cholecystectomy, and gastrectomy. Ottava features four arms integrated directly into the operating table, positioning it as a direct competitor to da Vinci and Medtronic’s systems. A commercial launch will begin with select U.S. customers, while a study for inguinal hernia applications continues.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Intuitive Surgical?

J.P. Morgan analyst Robbie Marcus downplayed the near-term threat, noting that da Vinci remains the preferred system due to Intuitive’s entrenched relationships with surgeons. Still, the regulatory milestone adds another layer of competitive noise to an already turbulent narrative.

Strong Q2 Numbers Fail to Impress

The stock’s weakness is particularly striking given that Intuitive delivered a second-quarter earnings beat on July 16. Earnings per share came in at $2.80, well above the consensus estimate of $2.48. Revenue reached $2.89 billion, topping the $2.83 billion forecast and representing 18.4% growth year over year. The company placed 468 surgical systems during the quarter, including 246 of the new da Vinci 5 model — up sharply from 180 units in the year-ago period. Global procedure growth hit 16%, with Ion lung biopsy procedures surging 36%.

Management maintained its full-year procedure growth guidance of 13.5% to 15.5%, though it now expects results to land near the middle of that range. That cautious tone, combined with signs of slowing U.S. procedure growth, prompted several analysts to trim their price targets. Marcus lowered his from $550 to $450 while keeping an “Overweight” rating. Other houses followed suit, citing a flatter growth trajectory and rising regulatory headwinds in healthcare.

Analyst Optimism Persists Despite the Sell-Off

Wall Street remains broadly constructive on Intuitive’s long-term prospects, even as the stock languishes. Goldman Sachs has a price target of $558, Citigroup recommends buying with a $500 target, TD Cowen sees $520, and Bernstein is the most bullish at $685 with an “Outperform” rating. Analysts point to recurring revenue streams, the da Vinci 5 upgrade cycle, the Ion platform, and the new AI software as catalysts that are being overlooked in the current sell-off.

Intuitive Surgical at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Institutional investors are sending mixed signals. Dimensional Fund Advisors increased its stake by 3.6% in the first quarter to 645,181 shares, while NewEdge Wealth boosted its position by 21.6% to 33,535 shares. Sei Investments, however, cut its holdings by 4.1% to 633,666 shares. Insider activity has been tilted toward selling: executives including Jeddi and EVP Gary Loeb disposed of 7,169 shares worth approximately $3.06 million over a 90-day window.

The stock now trades nearly 30% below its 200-day moving average of €418.11. Whether the oversold RSI reading sparks a reversal or the selling has further to run will depend on whether investors can look past the near-term noise to the procedural growth story that Intuitive’s management continues to pitch.
