IREN’s AI Infrastructure Story Hits a $800 Million Governance Wall as Meta Stalks the Market

A 7% Friday bounce to €36.35 offered scant relief for IREN shareholders. The stock remains down 35.62% over the past month and 47% below its November 3 record of €68.61. Two distinct pressures — a massive founder compensation plan and a strategic shift by Meta Platforms — have converged to test the company’s ambitious AI cloud narrative.
The board’s approval of an $800 million stock package for co-founders William and Daniel Roberts triggered a sharp sell-off. Investors also reacted to a $50 million annual sponsorship deal with the Golden State Warriors and plans to issue 8 million new employee shares. The market’s message was immediate: confidence in management’s capital discipline has eroded.
That governance concern now sits alongside a fresh competitive threat. Meta’s intention to resell surplus AI compute capacity raises the spectre that the social media giant could evolve from a customer into a rival for independent neocloud providers. With GPU availability gradually normalising, the move may signal not just a cyclical softening but a structural reassessment of the entire AI compute ecosystem.
IREN’s fundamentals remain intact on paper. The company holds a five-year, $3.4 billion contract with Nvidia for air-cooled Blackwell GPUs to be deployed at its Childress data centres, with ramp-up starting in early 2027. A strategic 5-gigawatt partnership with Nvidia for global expansion is also in place. The build-out to 480 megawatts by 2026, including the Horizon 1–4 phases, is said to be on schedule, with contracted capacity already fully sold. The stated target is $3.7 billion in annual revenue by the end of fiscal 2026.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?
But execution gaps are glaring. In its fiscal third quarter, IREN generated just $144.8 million in revenue against analyst expectations of nearly $220 million. The loss per share of $0.33 also missed estimates. The gap between contracted potential and actual cash flow has prompted Bernstein analyst Gautam Chhugani to note that competitors CoreWeave and Nebius generate more revenue per megawatt. IREN is still building its enterprise business and scaling more slowly.
The company itself acknowledged in a regulatory filing that the $3.7 billion revenue target is not fully secured, hinging on timely GPU deliveries, operational ramp, and the avoidance of disruptions from hardware supply, tariffs, bitcoin volatility, and debt levels. Additional capacity planned for 2027 (1,210 MW) and beyond (5 GW including the Nostrum acquisition in Spain) adds further financing needs.
Technically, the stock is deeply oversold. The 14-day relative strength index sits at 35.2, a level that often precedes a rebound. Yet the 30-day annualised volatility of 93.43% warns of sharp swings in either direction. The share price is 13.26% below its 200-day moving average of €41.91 and far from the 50-day average of €46.74. The immediate test is whether IREN can reclaim those near-term moving averages.
IREN at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Management has moved to address operational shortcomings, appointing Kambiz Aghili as product chief and Michael Nudelman to lead corporate development. The message is clear: the market is no longer paying for vision alone. Institutional sentiment remains split — Portman Square Capital added roughly $6 million in the first quarter, while the Private Advisor Group trimmed its position.
Despite the turmoil, IREN still commands a market capitalisation of about €12 billion and a 152.75% gain over the past 12 months. The bull case rests on converting the Nvidia and Microsoft (a nearly $10 billion contract) commitments into revenue before further dilution or hyperscaler encroachment undermines pricing power. The bear case warns that rising financing needs, governance concerns, and Meta’s new competitive play could deepen the current downtrend. For now, the stock is caught between a promising long-term thesis and very real near-term headwinds.
