IREN’s High-Stakes Pivot: Can Execution Outrun Compensation Controversy and Meta’s Shadow?

The transformation story at IREN is as audacious as it is fragile. Once a pure-play bitcoin miner, the company is now racing to reinvent itself as a cloud infrastructure provider for artificial intelligence workloads. That pivot has already secured some of the biggest names in tech as clients — Microsoft and Nvidia — but the market is no longer willing to give management the benefit of the doubt. After a brutal 35% monthly slide, the stock’s brief Friday bounce of 7.01% to €36.35 felt more like a gasp than a recovery.
The scale of the ambition is hard to ignore. IREN has locked in a five-year leasing agreement with Microsoft worth an estimated $9.7 billion for 200 megawatts of capacity, alongside a separate $3.4 billion deal with Nvidia. The company plans to push its AI cloud capacity to 480 megawatts by the end of 2026 and simultaneously boost bitcoin mining hashrate to 30 exahashes per second in the near term, with a target of 40 EH/s in the first half of 2025. A $3.65 billion credit facility backs the Microsoft project, covering roughly 96% of the GPU hardware costs.
Yet the doubters are growing louder. Bernstein analysts point out that IREN lags pure-play data center rivals CoreWeave and Nebius in revenue per megawatt – a metric that will determine whether the infrastructure build-out actually generates acceptable returns. Questions about pricing power have only intensified since Meta Platforms announced plans to sell excess AI computing capacity into the commercial cloud market, threatening to squeeze margins for everyone.
Then there is the governance headache that refuses to fade. On June 30, IREN’s board approved a stock award of 18.2 million shares – about 5% of total outstanding shares – to co-CEOs Daniel and William Roberts. The package carries a six-year lock-up period and a commitment to issue no further awards until at least 2031, but the sheer size has rattled investors. The value at the time of grant was around $700 million, though some estimates have put it closer to $800 million. Add to that a $50 million annual sports sponsorship deal, and the impression of cash mismanagement is hard to shake.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?
The stock’s technical picture underscores the unease. The 14-day relative strength index sits at 35.2, flirting with oversold territory that may have contributed to Friday’s gain. But the share price still trades 22% below its 50-day moving average of €46.74 and 13% under the 200-day average of €41.91. The gap to the 52-week high of €68.61, reached in November 2025, now stands at 47%. The 30-day annualized volatility of 93.4% tells its own story: this is a stock for traders with iron stomachs, not buy-and-hold investors.
Institutional sentiment is split. Portman Square Capital built a new $6.05 million position in the first quarter of 2026, while Private Advisor Group LLC cut its stake by 15.5% over the same period. Two opposing bets on the same thesis – a sign of just how uncertain the payoff from IREN’s transformation remains.
The bull case still rests on the company’s ability to execute its infrastructure roadmap. If the new data centers come online on schedule and AI cloud revenue starts flowing in line with the contracted backlog, selling pressure could ease. The upcoming appearance of IREN in the Russell 1000 index at the end of June 2026 would also bring welcome visibility. Management recently added senior hires to accelerate global data center development.
IREN at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The bear case, however, is more immediate. Competitors like CoreWeave already generate superior revenue per megawatt, and Meta’s entry into commercial cloud could compress pricing across the board. Meanwhile, the company continues to tap convertible bonds and at-the-market equity offerings for capital, diluting existing holders. If the infrastructure build stalls or the next quarterly reports fail to show meaningful AI service revenue, the stock has further to fall.
For now, the market is watching execution with a blend of hope and suspicion. The next few quarters will provide the first hard evidence of whether IREN can translate headline-grabbing contracts into actual earnings. Until then, the stock remains caught between a transformative opportunity and the growing weight of its own strategic and governance choices.
