Iridium Deal and Insider Sales Drag Rocket Lab Stock to Multi-Month Low

Rocket Lab’s shares have suffered a severe setback this week, deepening a slide that began in May and wiping out more than half the company’s market value. The latest trigger came on Thursday when Piper Sandler initiated coverage with a Neutral rating and a $83 price target, citing an ambitious valuation relative to SpaceX. The stock tumbled more than 11% on U.S. exchanges, settling at around $67, while in European trading it closed at €59.10. That compares with a 52-week high of roughly $150 (€133.80) reached on 27 May, leaving the equity 55.8% below its peak. The Relative Strength Index has dropped to 28.6, signaling deep oversold territory even as buyers have yet to step in decisively.
Piper Sandler’s cautious stance stands apart from a largely bullish analyst consensus. According to TipRanks, the average price target among covering firms is $111.40, with ratings clustered around “Strong Buy” or “Moderate Buy.” Morgan Stanley reaffirmed its Overweight rating and a $105 target, while raising its bull case scenario to $293 in light of the Iridium deal. Citi rates the stock Outperform, Bank of America has a $110 price target, and both Roth and Citizens see $130 as achievable. The hesitation from Piper Sandler, which also gave an Overweight rating to rival AST SpaceMobile with a $100 target, reflects concern that Rocket Lab’s recent expansion moves may have already been priced in.
At the heart of the selloff is the planned $8 billion acquisition of satellite operator Iridium Communications, announced in July. The transaction is structured as $27 in cash plus a variable number of Rocket Lab shares valued in a range of $67.50 to $112.50 per Iridium share, totaling $54 per Iridium share. Rocket Lab is financing the deal partly through a $3.6 billion bridge facility, stoking fears among existing shareholders of significant dilution. The law firm Wohl & Fruchter LLP has opened an investigation into whether the consideration is fair to Iridium stockholders. Since the deal was unveiled, Rocket Lab’s stock has lost nearly a fifth of its value, and Iridium shares have also traded below the implied acquisition price.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rocket Lab?
Adding to the pressure, Rocket Lab founder and CEO Peter Beck sold shares worth approximately $110 million, a move that several market observers interpreted as a lack of confidence. The insider sales compounded a sector-wide rout that erupted after AST SpaceMobile launched a second convertible bond offering worth $1 billion. Space-focused names including Redwire and Intuitive Machines fell by an average of 10.3% that day, while more traditional defense and aerospace companies such as L3Harris and Lockheed Martin posted only modest declines. Goldman Sachs analysts note that space stocks as a group exhibit roughly five times the volatility of the S&P 500, a dynamic that has been in full display this month: Rocket Lab has lost about 34% in July and AST SpaceMobile nearly 38%.
Despite the market turmoil, Rocket Lab’s operational performance has been strong. Second-quarter revenue reached $200.3 million, up 63% year-over-year, and the order backlog grew 20% to $2.2 billion. The company continues to make progress on its next-generation Neutron rocket. A successful test of the Archimedes vacuum engine was completed, and a contract for the VICTUS-HAZE mission for the U.S. Space Force was secured. The first flight of Neutron, designed to lift heavier payloads with a partially reusable first stage, is targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026 after earlier delays linked to a fuel tank crack. Management has stressed that the launch will not be rushed to meet an arbitrary date but will proceed only when the vehicle is fully ready.
From a technical perspective, the stock is now testing a key support zone between $63.70 and $66.73, a level that analysts at wallstreetONLINE describe as a decisive short-term threshold. While near-term momentum is bearish, they point to a constructive Elliott Wave structure on a longer timeframe. The high volatility of the equity makes near-term forecasts unusually uncertain, but the oversold reading on the RSI has historically preceded rebounds in similar situations. Whether the slide pauses or continues will likely depend on how soon Rocket Lab can demonstrate tangible milestones from its Iridium integration and Neutron development, both of which are expected to take years to materialize fully. The closing of the Iridium acquisition is not anticipated until mid-2027.
