Japan's Crypto Law Sets Stage for Metaplanet's Securities Pivot as Bitcoin Options Income Flows

A sweeping legal change in Japan has handed Metaplanet the regulatory runway it needed to transform from a passive Bitcoin collector into a fully licensed financial intermediary. The Japanese parliament’s decision to grant cryptocurrencies the same legal status as equities in June 2026 dramatically improved the tax treatment for domestic investors, and Metaplanet is now the first major corporate beneficiary of that shift. The company completed the acquisition of Siiibo Securities on Monday, spending roughly 2.1 billion yen (around $13.1 million) to secure a brokerage licence and a direct route into the regulated capital markets.
The Tokyo-based firm has rebranded the acquired entity as Metaplanet Securities Inc., equipping it with a special licence to structure and distribute digital securities. This marks a decisive break from Metaplanet’s earlier approach of simply hoarding Bitcoin as a reserve asset. Under the banner of “Project Nova,” the company intends to use its 43,000 BTC pile — the third-largest public corporate stash globally — as collateral for a suite of new products. Among the first planned offerings are digital corporate bonds that would trade around the clock and accrue interest daily, developed in partnership with stablecoin issuer JPYC and blockchain platform Progmat. The settlement for these instruments will run on stablecoins.
The pivot into securities is not Metaplanet’s only source of active income from its Bitcoin holdings. During the second quarter of 2026, its options-writing segment generated $10.95 million in revenue, bringing the first-half total to $29.2 million. These cash flows provide a buffer while the securities division builds its product pipeline, and they demonstrate that the Bitcoin stack is earning a yield rather than sitting idle.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Metaplanet?
Management is simultaneously pursuing an aggressive accumulation target. By the end of 2026, Metaplanet aims to hold 100,000 BTC. The longer-term goal for 2027 is 210,000 units — roughly one percent of all Bitcoin that will ever exist. These ambitions sit against a backdrop of continued market skepticism. The stock closed last Friday at €1.35, notching an 8 percent gain for the week but still sitting roughly 39 percent below its year-opening level. The shares are a long way from their 52-week peak of €9.02.
The first results of a feasibility study for Bitcoin-backed bonds are expected later this year. If they confirm the structure’s viability, Metaplanet will have one more tool to bridge the gap between its crypto holdings and the traditional Japanese capital market — a gap that Japan’s new legal framework has now narrowed considerably.
