Lufthansa Wins State Support and Orders More A350s as BlackRock Takes 4.3% Stake

Lufthansa is navigating a turbulent summer with two powerful tailwinds — a €500 million government package and a deepened commitment to Airbus — even as its share price struggles to recover and a domestic route is grounded.
The German cabinet approved a national aviation strategy on Wednesday that will cut the air travel tax from July 1, 2026, and cover air traffic control costs for regional airports. Chancellor Friedrich Merz, speaking at the ILA Berlin air show, underscored aviation’s role in Germany’s innovation ecosystem. Industry associations welcomed the measures but cautioned that location costs have roughly doubled since the pandemic, calling for further action.
On the fleet front, Lufthansa has firmed up orders for ten more Airbus A350-900 long-haul jets, bringing its total A350 order book to 75. The Lufthansa Group also expects to take delivery of its 700th Airbus aircraft later this year — a milestone in a partnership that dates back to the first A300 in 1976. To support the expanding fleet, the two companies signed a new component-service contract covering the entire A220 family operated across the group’s airlines.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Lufthansa?
The financial picture is more nuanced. BlackRock disclosed a 4.32% stake in Deutsche Lufthansa AG on June 4, 2026, a filing that includes indirect holdings and various instruments. Meanwhile, Lufthansa Cargo is showcasing its latest logistics solutions at the transport logistic China fair in Shanghai from June 24 to 26.
Shares in the carrier rose roughly 2% on the day to €8.21, bringing the 12-month gain to about 12%. But the stock remains 14% below its 52-week high of €9.59, and has lost approximately 6% since the start of the year. The mixed market sentiment is mirrored by an operational adjustment: Lufthansa will discontinue its Bremen–Frankfurt route on July 1, 2026, a reminder that neither state backing nor fleet investment alone can make every connection profitable.
