A criminal trial that opened in early July before the Kassel Regional Court has put Germany’s food industry on notice. Former executives of a sausage manufacturer face charges of negligent homicide and bodily harm linked to product contaminations that occurred between 2015 and 2019. A verdict is expected in August 2026. The case highlights the consequences of failing safety and hygiene standards, even as the wider sector invests heavily in prevention.

One area seeing rapid change is personal protective equipment. In cutting plants and large commercial kitchens, mechanical risks remain the top hazard. Suppliers such as niroflex now offer certified stainless-steel mesh gloves, aprons and boleros that meet DIN EN ISO 13999, EN 14328 and EN 1082. Automation is another lever. New pneumatic soft grippers made from FDA-certified silicone allow delicate food items to be handled at high cycle rates without damage. Their force-optimised finger geometries enable packaging processes that once required manual labour to be automated. This reduces the risk of cuts and repetitive strain injuries while increasing throughput.

Artificial intelligence is also entering quality control. According to the Digital Food Monitor 2025, sector decision-makers already use AI for real-time energy optimisation and product forecasting. In inspection roles, the systems check enormous weekly volumes, boosting end-product safety and freeing staff from monotonous visual checks. Despite these advances, experts point to remaining hurdles in widespread adoption, particularly around practical usability and cost-benefit trade-offs.
